After seeing a lot of cleaned silver lately in person, the surface color makes me think cleaned, but a better picture would make it easier to tell.

Ah, hum.... Since when is a question posed 'too quickly?'
The coin in question looks Very Fine but the color needs further study.
That answers the OP. End of story.

Pictures look like scans which are good for showing details. Not the best for showing surfaces though. Best to avoid. Something better will show up. Patience is key

That is why I post here. Whenever I have a question on a coin I usually find the answers here, there must be very knowledgable coin enthusiasts.

Might be better to crop the image and have set your scanner to a higher dpi. I can't see the liberty but I am guessing around VF maybe old cleaning.

I agree with the VF grade. It may have been lightly cleaned in the past, but it looks like a scanned image and I think there's a good chance it will have decent eye appeal when you get it in hand. As long as you didn't pay a king's ransom for it, I think it is a decent coin to add to a collection and not a critical mistake.

a "cleaned" coin is frowned upon in the sentiment that we try to impart an idea of the scope of damage that can be caused in the cleaning process. However... owning a cleaned coin is not an "end game". I've knowingly purchased cleaned coins that are 1)beautiful AND 2)can often be attained at a discount. Collect what you want to collect and to the wind with what anyone else has to say. It's your collection I paid a meager $18 for this lovely 3 cent nickel. Quite attractive, don't you think? If you don't....I could care less. I LOVE IT!

Quote: Collect what you want to collect and to the wind with what anyone else has to say. It's your collection That's true, but the OP is risking spending money before he knows how to identify a cleaned coin or even if he likes them well enough to be buying them. He is leaping without looking and will regret it later. This is what we're trying to stop before he starts throwing serious money away.

Thank you ssuperddave. I post here before I buy any coin to get some feedback since I'm a beginner.

I saw; just kind of wanted to get you to make that clearer for the people reading who are also in your shoes. You're doing it right, but it has the appearance that you're not.
