I'd just buy an Overton book and start collecting by Overton varieties if I were you. I hate to break this to you, but you have an infection...it's called Bust Half fever. There is no cure. It is an unrelenting desire for more and better Bust Halves.

105 different PCGS and NGC graded Overtons here so far, and my fever is really getting bad now.

1835- 10 varieties with none above R-3
1836- 23 varieties with 1 R-5 and 5 R-4s

I'd agree with DoubleEagle. I personally don't go out looking for any particular date or marriage, I just buy the ones I like the looks of and sort it out when I get home.

I just browse like Aces and buy the nicest original surface slabbed and/or raw ones I can afford. I am now starting to run into the problem of duplication. I'll see a decent one and darn it, I already have it. Sometimes it's an opportunity for upgrade, sometimes not.

If you do pick a particular yeardate, here is the main reason to not pick 1827. O-149 is a R8. A very pricey coin.

Maybe do 1826? 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and about 20 Overtons, with R5's being the rarest for that year.

oh, I know I got the fever. I am at 70 and counting. Missing the elusive 1815 and 1839-O from my 'Redbook" collection. Need something to feed the fever!

I can definitely relate and empathize with this.

This is the time to start collecting die states.

No actual duplicates yet, Aces. Each of the 105 is a different Overton, but I go to shows and run into Overtons I already have in the collection. Thus, the "duplication" I mention. 1835 o.107 is one that I have seen too often it seems. It makes the hunt all the more fun.

1815 is gonna be a tough one, Ray. I have yet to find one I like that I can afford. Small mintage and many were cleaned.

Good luck!

I started trying to acquire all the die marriages for 1818 (since one day I realized I had more of that year than any other.) Currently missing O-106 and O-115 for the Die Marriages. Unfortunately, missing 10 of the possible Overton Varieties.

Total Overtons = 124

I don't collect halves, but I do collect varieties of large cents. Here's my method. I seek out any R-4 variety. They're common enough to be found and much of the time not being sold as any particular variety, making them affordable. If I see an R-5 or higher that I can afford, I go for it. I figure that all the R-1 through R-3s I can easily fill in later.

When you complete the varieties, you can then start collecting all the die states.

The yeardate I have the most Overtons for is 1824. I think I have 10 out of 17. What the heck, I may try to complete the Overton set for that yeardate. Two R5's out the bunch, none rarer....not that bad.

Jumping from 1836 to 1810. Big difference with the older coins. Up to 90 different varieties

Added two more 1824 Overtons. Only six or so more to go. Be interesting to see how soon I find one of each.

So I figured I would go for a year out of each decade for my variety search
1810 First Decade
1814 Second
1821 Third
1836 Fourth

Got 1836 almost done, and others off to a start. Interesting how the key attributes change from year to year.
