Quote:Any one have a link to a news article about the round two and then switching to a design of Washington crossing the Delaware. It seems like be too much like the New Jersey State Quarter for my comfort. I just don't like it as a permanent idea for a coin reverse. No news article. The law: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bi.../hr6184/textQuote: (B)
Second round at discretion of secretary (i)
Determination
The Secretary may make a determination before the end of the 9-year period beginning when the first quarter dollar is issued under this subsection to continue the period of issuance until a second national site in each State, the District of Columbia, and each territory referred to in this subsection has been honored with a design on a quarter dollar. (ii)
Notice and report
Within 30 days after making a determination under clause (i), the Secretary shall submit a written report on such determination to the Committee on Financial Services of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs of the Senate. (iii)
Applicability of provisions
If the Secretary makes a determination under clause (i), the provisions of this subsection applicable to site and design selection and approval, the order, timing, and conditions of issuance shall apply in like manner as the initial issuance of quarter dollars under this subsection, except that the issuance of quarter dollars pursuant to such determination bearing the first design shall commence in order immediately following the last issuance of quarter dollars under the first round. (iv)
Continuation until all states are honored
If the Secretary makes a determination under clause (i), the program under this subsection shall continue until a second site in each State has been so honored. (8)
Designs after end of program
Upon the completion of the coin program under this subsection, the design on— (A)
the obverse of the quarter dollar shall revert to the same design containing an image of President Washington in effect for the quarter dollar before the institution of the 50-State quarter dollar program; and (B)
notwithstanding the fourth sentence of subsection (d)(1), the reverse of the quarter dollar shall contain an image of General Washington crossing the Delaware River prior to the Battle of Trenton.

I don't think they'd want to extend the program after '21, since there are provisions for a permanent reverse for '22. Also, I'd think that on the back of some of the Mint's employees' minds is 2032: Washington's tricentennial and the centennial of the Washington quarter. We'll probably get a new round of special designs then, not unlike the 2009 cents. Still, it would be interesting to see the 1932 obverse return after a 24-year hiatus come 2022.

I could see them deciding to extend it so the end coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Washington quarter.

Quote: But I would really like to see the old eagle design back. Not going to happen, because... Quote: by law the design has to go to a depiction of Washington crossing the Delaware. Sorry. Quote: I would had like them on a bigger coin as well. If you are really into the designs buy a puck of your favorites. They'll blow the two bits out of the water any day. The Treasury secretary must decide in the ninth year of the current program, i.e. in 2018 whether or not to continue a second round of ATB designs featuring a second site in each of the 56 states, territories and jurisdictions. The series as a whole has been far better executed than the haphazard design by committee State Quarters. Personally I don't mind the revolving reverses though 4 or 5 per year is pushing it. It keeps the coinage interesting and importantly circulating. Each denomination should have a different obverse or reverse every year. The cent could be natural flora/fauna including sites, the nickel revolves with culture and cultural institutions, the dime could be government including dead presidents, the quarter focusing on armed forces and programs associated with the armed forces, the dollar coin on some aspect of the nation's historical events including the NA series. Any coin larger than $1 should just have representations of liberty and probably be silver clad. Therefore, Fox, your proposed famous dogs series could be on the cent or whatever the lowest denomination that will be. I agree that the half dollar needs to come back into use, but I have a much more radical solution to the concerns of the vending machine industry. GET RID OF THE CENT AND THE PAPER $1. Make the new 5c the size of the current cent with steps to its eventual elimination also, but make in aluminum with a gold color sheen unreeded edge. Keep the dime the basic unit and it's current size. Drop the quarter to the size of the current nickel and leave reeded. Bring the half to the size of the current quarter plain edged. Now the dollar coin is correctly sized in proportion to the others. The former half dollar coin sizing could become a $2 or $5 coin. Such currency conversion will be extremely confusing and painful to the public at large, but the coinage of the US is overdue to for another overhaul. What was practical 50 years ago is impractical now. The United Kingdom went from sterling to decimal coinage in the early 70's and the British people did not riot as a result and recently the conversion of many of the EC countries to the €. The US just needs four basic circulating coins: $1, 50c, 25c, & 10c.

I honestly like the new designs for the quarters. Maybe not every design would be my favorite but it gives me something modern to collect and look for. Especially once my son grows up and (hopefully) gets into collecting it will be fun looking for the different designs. Plus since other coins are one design I feel like I only really need one of each so collecting Franklins, cents, nickels and all that aren't that fun just for the years (except Kennedy halves I started that long ago and feel the need to finish the pdss). To each their own though!

If you go to another country and there are lots of designs, it's far more fun, if you have 4 designs to collect and you get them day one, what else is there to look for?

I like the ATB Quarters, but I think simply extending the program would be a lazy thing to do from an innovation standpoint.

Makes me wonder if we had done these designs on the dollars, instead of the hideous president ones, if people would actually be using them!

No they wouldn't . As I have said before how does changing the design on a coin no one sees make them want to use it? You have to get them using it first and then do the design changes to get their interest up.

No, because people will still use the one dollar note. Get rid of the one dollar note, then we can discuss what would have been a better program for the dollar coin.
