I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between two dealers at the coin show yesterday and one was claiming that he have few lincoln keys in the showcase but not many people are interested. He had thought with the 2009 memorial coming up people will be running to get their hands on one.

If coin collecting is anything like the stock market then when the 2009's are released the prices will actually drop. It is the old saying "buy on rumor sell on news" which the market does generally follow. I traded stocks for years and watched it happen quit a bit(made my money and got out). If coin values mimic stocks then there will be a run up until 2009 than a steady drop to realistic prices. Now, if when the 2009 set is released and the Lincolns pick up a bunch of new collectors then they might hold there prices, but I would still except some sort of pullback from profit takers who bought them to only sell them later for a profit.

This is all IMHO and am comparing it to the stocks which I do not know if coins follow the same type of patterns as stock do. I wonder if there are charts like stocks where one could study the affects of coins being released and its effects on the price of the coins? I studied charts for a long time and got pretty good at predicting the trading patterns of certain stocks. If I were a betting man, then I would assume that the release of the 2009's are already factored into the price of Lincolns now. Anyways I rambled on, something to think about.

I understand that lincoln key's will increase its value in the coming years. But why are we rushing to buy the 1909 VDB?

getting them before they go any higher. For some reason this will be the 1909 version of the poor man's double die of 1955 so best load up before they get advertised of the change in design and celebration of lincoln.

Well for me, it's a cheaper alternative then the S version right now and I don't foresee them being any cheaper over the coming years as interest heightens.

It's the 100 year mark for the Victor D Brenner design, which itself has historical significance. It's the first coin to depict an actual person and it's the longest running design, ever.

Great deal there sleak!

I've been hunting for a 1909P (no VDB), the numbers produced are MUCH higher than the VDB, but they are a lot more difficult to find in BU. I was hoping to get a fantastic deal on one to replace my brown....it's a lot harder than you think. Seems more people stashed away the VDB's so they're pretty easy to find.

Stocks and coins have little to nothing in common. I too dapple in the stock market. Stocks go up, down and some vanish. They are dependant on a massive variety of differences in buisness, trends, the economy, etc.
Coins, as far as I can remember have done nothing but either stayed level or gone up. The only difference is the economy as to coin prices not increasing. There are only so many coins of each type and that is that unlike stocks that appear and vanish, go up, down, all over the place.
As to the coming of the 2009 Lincoln, I doubt that the prices of any coins will deminish during or after their issuance.
Coin show this Sunday and I think I'll buy as many as I can afford just in case.
Of course this is just my opinion and I always wanted to invest in buggy whip companies when the price of gas got out of hand.

Hey hey...glad I found this, great post and interesting reading.

I am selling all my VF and below semikey Lincolns and buying up and keeping all the XF and better. And I agree with an above post: 09-P is a much tougher coin than the VDB.
