I too noticed this upward trend in prices for any 09 Lincoln Cents. At a coin show today I asked a dealer I know and he said many dealers are getting ready to produce those little plastic holders with some 1909's and some 2009's. If possible one of each type. Don't know if you've seen these poping up lately but they will have 3 nickels of each later type, 3 different ming 43 cents, etc. One small printed out piece of cardboard, a few coins in any grade and presto, you have a seller. With the comeing of the 2009 Lincoln, there will lots of those.

I looked at a couple different coin trend charts. In both it showed the 09-S VDB hadn't lost value... EVER. Heck, anyone who bought it 5, 2 or even ONE year ago has seen gains. |

How many companies, ie.. Coin Show on HSN, will be selling sets that say. 100 Years, get them while they are hot.. YADA YADA. I dont think its collectors as much as the HSN's of the country buying them to sell the 100th anniversary of some sort.
Just my guess.

I strongly disagree! Market manipulation like this is almost always dealer driven! Your statement indicates a lack of understanding of how prevalent the telemarketers and promoters are among those who are less educated collectors. Market manipulation is a tried and true dealer behavior and it has been around forever (remember the guy who had possession of all 5 of the 1913 Lib nickels and he posted rediculously high buy prices for them for decades before bringing his coins to market?) It is not a prctice that is going away anytime soon. |

i bought 4 1909 vdbs today =D now I have 6... Not only because they might increase in value, but because I just love lincolns... I couldnt stop myself.

to my thinking the inflations of prices is the cause of ebay and the internet itself. they over popularize coins and prices which make people they will be worth more. but people do belive what they see and buy buy buy! |

Only the buyer can truly manipulate prices. It's all supply and demand. Sure things like marketing can affect demand, but in the end if collectors aren't buying the price will go down. |

Dealers ,marketers,and advertisers may have a temporary effect on the prices ,,but it won't hold .the only prices that rise and stay are those that are demand driven and that demand is driven by buyers ,,not sellers. a person could use several of the modern errors/varieties that have been found in the State Quarter series, or the new nickels,or Presidential dollars as examples. the hype hits and prices rise ,, and invariably within a short time , the prices fall and stabilize well below the initial hype prices brought on by the marketing machine. In addition to possible dealer hoarding them, collectors hoarding them, coin shops, etc. remember there were possibly close to 28 million 09VDB's minted. However, due to normal distruction of coinage over the now almost 100 years, probably a large percentage have been lost. Numerous individuals have melted them down for Copper content. Now with 300,000,000 people in the USA alone, add in some millions of people in other countries, the amount of coin collectors has increased extensively. The now on line coin dealers, ebay and other auction houses, coin shops, coin shows, the Mint producing so many collector type coins, coin collectors have increased. Just one of the many additional reasons for the increases in coin prices of all types. |

I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between two dealers at the coin show yesterday and one was claiming that he have few lincoln keys in the showcase but not many people are interested. He had thought with the 2009 memorial coming up people will be running to get their hands on one.

If coin collecting is anything like the stock market then when the 2009's are released the prices will actually drop. It is the old saying "buy on rumor sell on news" which the market does generally follow. I traded stocks for years and watched it happen quit a bit(made my money and got out). If coin values mimic stocks then there will be a run up until 2009 than a steady drop to realistic prices. Now, if when the 2009 set is released and the Lincolns pick up a bunch of new collectors then they might hold there prices, but I would still except some sort of pullback from profit takers who bought them to only sell them later for a profit.
This is all IMHO and am comparing it to the stocks which I do not know if coins follow the same type of patterns as stock do. I wonder if there are charts like stocks where one could study the affects of coins being released and its effects on the price of the coins? I studied charts for a long time and got pretty good at predicting the trading patterns of certain stocks. If I were a betting man, then I would assume that the release of the 2009's are already factored into the price of Lincolns now. Anyways I rambled on, something to think about.
