In your buying endeavors, get a key TYPE, not a key date. They will be more in demand as there are no other alternatives to fill that hole. A 1793 Chain cent is probably the best choice if you are wanting a key large cent. A 1799 is always in demand, but most collectors would turn towards a more-common date instead (1798, 1800, etc.).

Are you mainly a copper collector? I assume you are based on your username.

I think I will give in, and just buy one marked 'replica' or 'copy', for $5.

You have S-3 coins selling on Heritage in VG08 problem holders selling for almost 7K.
Prices paid are based on real auction results and they vary wildly from coin to coin.

Problem free VG8 S-2...(9-11K based on eye appeal, strike).

The ebay coin you linked to I would buy for no more than 7.5-8K just based on the eye appeal..if that's what it really looks like.

I don't like the damage on the "E" on CENT.

Here is the PCGS (not TrueView) image;

I have a set I am building from 1793 to 1909 (all PCGS Good to Fine condition)....I have a nice set but no major key dates yet or varieties would like to get one just to have a ''less common set'' (I hate that term but it is what it is.....I mean no disrespect towards people who can't afford them.....I can't afford a lot of the most expensive stuff but can afford a chain cent, 1799 or a 1804 in lower grades....one at the time I can't buy all 3 of them at the same time.....maybe a few years between purchases).

So here is mine opinion---Seems as I was interested myself on this one. One things clear -- that hole in the center seems big but its not. In hand it would most likely not be even noticed-I think as usually pictures are taken with auto on mode-hence the much brighter close ups. Also the sensor brightened up the coin to the extent as to the satisfaction of the correct light amount the senser is sensing to the dark subject. But of course a camera on auto dose not know its a nice Chain cent---lol. The picture showing the holder is correct color as I would correctly assume. As a Sheldon 2 in grade VG this coin seems to have a fine rev-- VG obv. !$12500. is what I offerd--as its a very nice coin in hand. --Store is holding it for owner. I asked for a offer price and they were fine. Ask what there return policy is - AA

Im getting this guy-- It does not have the rev central issues. It got other small issues mainly on the obverse-non very distracting. Portrait seems strong----Sheldon ones will exhibit weak dates like this one I'm getting. Getting a perfect coin graded VG8 is worth $18,000. Its very rare to get one with out its problems at VG levels. Even Red Book does not carry premiums prices*.

Nope the Coin I'm getting has smooth nice surfaces for the most part and one point or two stronger details---- my picture is not great. I was interested in the coin your interested in --and almost struck a deal-but they were not willing to give a 12 month payment option.

Please don't resurrect threads like this. The last post was in March. I know you're proud and excited for your recent purchase, but I'm sure everyone has seen your chain cent by now.

No offense intended.

TypeCoin971793, you dont have to read the thread if you don't want to. I think it was fine for 732amran to make a followup post.

Thank u Osprey- I has really surprised at Typcoins rebuke. I only was adding a interesting point out on the topic. Seeing this thread was interesting to me for I was interested about this exact coin recently.--when I looked up in search--(Chain cent) and low behold this thread came up. When your looking to spend over 10K I want to do my research. A chain cent is nothing to wiff about----when its Better than VG

I completely understand 732amran. Threads get "resurrected" all the time, and I don't see a problem. Also, a nice coin
