Very cool! When did vending machines start checking coins for electrical conductivity though? I remember reading that War Nickels included the Manganese so that they wouldn't be rejected by nickel vending machines.

Neat little piece of history nonetheless! How many did they make and spend before they were caught?

This is what I find interesting.

Why not do the old "string & quarter"? Drill a hole through the quarter, attach string, buy cigarettes, take back quarter.

This has the added benefits of no evidence & not having to make 100's of them. Although... in a crowded area I could see how these could be more discreet. No one watching you tugging on a string & all.
