The poll results are interesting and not at all surprising.

I pick everything up - even a smashed penny in the mud. I don't find very much, perhaps an average of 1 coin per week.
Last week I found a 1 Euro coin in the parking lot at work. The first Euro coin I ever found, and very unusual because I live in Michigan. I pondered how it got here.....

It boggles the mind how many pennies I pick up each day. We sell tickets for $10.29 (which means anyone who's not paying with a card is likely to get a penny back). Most people tell the cashier to keep it. Others take it, walk 3-4 steps & drop it on the floor rather than in their pocket....some folks actually toss them in the garbage.
"Find a penny, pick it up & all the day you'll have good luck!"

Wow, I still can't believe people would throw a penny away. What if they unknowingly got an error coin worth a lot, such as a 1999 WAM? The only time I saw a person outside of school (my friends know I collect money so they always give me their change ) get rid of their change was back in January at my local ice skating rink. A man bought some hot cocoa for $3.25, paid with 4 singles, and threw the change in the tip jar. However, he spilled the cup, so he only got about half of the stuff. The cashier even offered him a refill, but he declined. That's probably the biggest waste I've seen. And the funny thing is, after that happened, I found 2 1 dollar bills on the ground over by the condiments.

As a kid, I always went everywhere in bare feet, even to elementry school. You learn to look out instinctively for the safety of your feet, by always scanning the ground in front of yourself. I still do that. I always seem to be luckier in finding money lying around than almost anyone else; I think I have figured out why Almost anyone can gues where money lying around is most likely to be found: Ticket offices bus stops taxi stands, bank teller windows, etc. I always give the money back to the person who dropped it. If I have no idea who the owner may be, I figure that I can keep it if is is only a small amount.

I get so happy when I go to vending machine at work and find someone forgot their nickel, dime or quarter.
I usually don't pick up pennies

Ed - We must be about the same era. A penny on the ground was a big deal and 2 cents for empty soda bottles found along the roadside was huge. My opinion of littering was a little different back then. I guess that was my early version of CRH.

US money: ignoring all the unusual stuff that will never come up on the ground, penny (happened on two occasions so far). Russian money: if it's not too muddy, even 1 kopek (0.02 cents US) is enough to be picked up; if it's muddy, I frown at 10 and 50 kopek coins (0.15 and 0.8 cents US respectively) but might still get them depending on the amount of mud, and definitely pick up anything higher (when I can see and reach it, obviously).
In most of the foreign countries I've visited, the lowest circulating denomination is more than 1 cent US, so of course I pick up any money.

I'll pick anything up. Usually I don't find anything more than pennies. I did find a silver dime laying on the ground in the middle of a trail in Glacier national park last fall. Not sure if it had been there since the 60s and erosion had only recently brought it back to the surface or if someone lost it a little bit before I came along.

Any thing that says "IN GOD WE TRUST" will not remain lying on the ground. The prospect of something interesting is alluring. Financial gains generally aren't my motivation.

All the time, every time, without regard to denomination.

It is good that they make Zincolns mainly out of zinc. If they are left where they are on the surface of the ground, they will rot back into it faster. "Dust to dust, ashes to ashes."
