Could be legit. And I mean COULD be. There was a story on some forum a few years ago about some bank teller handing a customer a "female" Presidential dollar and it turned out to be an Eagle. $10 face for the price of $1. Anything it possible.

Funny coins make otherwise rational people even funnier.

You will likely get yourself in more trouble investigating this coin than not. Everything about the ad screams no. A suspected antique dealer selling a well known gold coin for peanuts...

I think that's an oversized replica of some kind, probably brass. The relief looks wrong anyway.

If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is.

For $5? Get it, it is a cool novelty! But, if it is real...

Look at the scale of the tag. That coin is HUGE. It is a novelty medal.

Quote: So are fakes normally this well faked? This is NOT a fake, it is a novelty item. A fake is something made to deceive and the quality, not really very good, and size of this piece obviously does not do that.

Yeah, I didn't really pay attention to the size of the tag when compared against the ash tray and then the coin. Got really focused on trying to spot errors in the "coin". Thanks for all your input. Sure is nice having a place to get second opinions.

Junk. Not a chance it's real. Look at Craigslist like a pawnshop. I don't buy or sell coins to pawn.

This forum can be a great place for those who just refuse to get a numismatic education. It never ceases to amaze that people think that there are these fantastic coin deals out there. Instead of looking on Kijiji or Craig's list, or Joe the country farmers auction spend some money on authentic numismatic publications and read them, and then read them again. Join the ANA or some other respected organisation , go to coin shows , frequent your local coin dealer, join a coin club. do whatever it takes to save yourself from greed and stupidity. For every great coin deal you think that is out there, I can guarantee that there are a thousand scammers just licking their collective chops to nail a greedy or illiterate numisfool. GET EDUCATED!!. The Tom foolery that exists in our great hobby is just beyond belief.
