What's kind of funny about this is that I believe the correct name for them is Liberty Dimes. At least that's what's on the front and binding of my Dansco book.

Quote:Aren't Liberty dimes, Mercury dimes? Liberty HEAD Dimes is one and Winged Liberty Head is the other right names.

Actually all dimes from 1796 to 1945 could be called Liberty head dimes.

just carl's distinction is even clearer when it is remembered that prior to 1892 the design was a SEATED liberty. Why they were referred to as Morgan dimes eludes my logic.

Same here... I know it obviously has something to do with the Morgan dollar.

As the dollars prior to 1878 were also Seated Liberty and the new dollar portrayed a head the dimes (and quarters and halves) slightly resembled the dollar. Best guess.

ChildOfTheWheat - I decided to share my set of Barber dimes here in your post - give you an idea of what you're aiming for. Mine are all circulated, and, for the most part, low grade. Pointed that out mainly because each coin came from ebay, and, with the exception of a couple of coins, the set was fairly easy on the pocket.

Child, did you know that "Morgan" dollars were referred to as "standard" dollars & not "morgans" during their production run

Quote: I just won a bit on e-bay for a 1892 AU-Details cleaned/scratched (it has someone's initials in it!) for only $3.50! ChildOfTheWheat, I hope you're enjoying coin collecting. I'm not sure how experienced a collector you are. I've been collecting for 30 years. The most important thing I've learned is to avoid buying coins that I may not enjoy owning later, or that I might have difficulty selling later. I ask myself these questions before every coin purchase, and these questions have served me well. The price you paid for your dime was a bargain for the grade, and if you're in it for the novelty of it (graffiti), then it may be well suited for a specialized collection, and the questions I proposed may not apply. Happy collecting!
