John thinks it is probably a gas bubble, too and would attribute it if I sent it in. I think gas bubble is the most likely, too.

Thanks for your help.

Shouldn't the toothpick pop a gas bubble?

I am assuming that the bubble is thick enough so it cannot be popped by a toothpick.

A tooth pick should flatten out the copper plating if it is a gas bubble. If the anomaly will not flatten out with applied pressure, it is then a die dent or something similar on the die itself.

Well...I was thinking that I just did not place enough pressure on it, so I tried again and it just will not flatten out. So I guess it is one of the alternatives mentioned. Thanks for your help. It is an elongated tear drop shape.

I appreciate the input. I have sent the coin to John Wexler for attribution and will let you know what he says.

I heard back from John Wexler about this coin. He thinks it is a gas bubble. Of course, if he is correct, it would suggest that gas bubbles cannot always be popped with a toothpick.

I bet it's a DDR, maybe not the prettiest, but a DDR. I never heard of a bubble that couldn't be burst. It makes me wonder about my 1976, it's certainly not plated.

I don't know, but I wouldn't think attributers try to pop bubbles on other people's coins. It looks like a bubble, but I think he missed the call. -_ - Just my opinion
