Well, we'll never know. But I ask myself the same question every time I see something on E-bay that goes for a bukc or two.

Maybe the owner had some freebie attributions from ANACS. I have a couple of them from when ANACS messed up a coin attribution I submitted. That reminds me - I haven't used them so maybe I should send in that 2002 messed up zincoln I got in change today.

What if you had a little kid who collected coins and this was his "bestie". You want to make it extra special for him/her so you .....

I too can't figure out why people do that. I've seen so many slabbed coins at coin shows selling for a fraction of what it costs to have it slabbed. In some instances it appears the plastic is worth more than the coin.

I've sent a couple cheapies in to ANACS so they're slabbed like the rest of the collection.

Fascinating to see, for example, how many LWC from 1938-58 are out there in top quality slabs in 65 or better that sell for far less than the slab cost. Some big bets on potential upgrades that went south! THe TPGs have the hobby by the neck.

What's worse is the obverse looks overgraded (to me)

Also new & inexperienced collectors who would shotgun coins to the tpgs to learn what grades they will come back as. I was one of those before ccf ... but mine were primarily big silver and some gold unless I knew it was a key

I have to admit I bought a congress 1989 half on ebay recently for $10. Though to be fair it did get a 69 and they were Probally hunting a 70. It's my first slabbed coin got it since it was free shipping and the exact amount for my gift card.

I'm thinking about doing that to about a dozen coins I got from my Grandfather. Most aren't worth much, but I've had them for 50 years, and imagine that if I gave them raw to the nieces and nephews, their provenance would be lost.

Good idea slabbing coins you don't want spent on gum and other various extravagances.
