Why Are DMPL/Dpl Morgans So Expensive?

1881-O is a pretty common year for PL/DMPL so values are depressed. The reason this coin hasn't sold is because it's almost $100 over market value and has plenty of competition.

But when you hold a true DMPL Morgan in hand, you'll know why they carry such a premium. There's nothing else in numismatics like a huge mirror-finished Morgan.

Low-grade DMPLs are just junk for the price, a very poor way to invest your money.

Below is a common date 1884 PL MS 65 that PCGS has listed for $750. The coin at Heritage has a current bid of $998.75. I was hoping to get the coin for under $700, but they ran me off with aggressive bidding. PCGS has only graded 26 1884's in MS 65 PL, so the price is being driven by demand and coin quality.

I've been searching ebay this way for a couple of days now. If I can't find a DMPL in my price range at Summer FUN, I'll probably try to buy one of the ones on my watch list. (Both are CCs, and priced well below Numismedia FMV)

That was weird... They should be fixed now. I'm stumped.... That's the first photo I've put on a post in a while and they're from my "previously uploaded" pics.... They were right when I previewed my post, lol..... Weird. O well, hopefully they're right now. I'll try to get an obverse pic of the whole slab tonight. It's a small white old ANACS slab... Bar none my favorites to buy.

Another thing to do is look for Morgan's that somehow didn't get the PL/DMPL designation... I've got a couple slabbed that I just don't know how they didn't get the designation... For regular prices.

Kinda bad pics, don't really show the PL aspect too well, I had to take the photos at an angle, but it's definitely quite mirrored, all I can think is the black smudge (grease?) through "United" on the reverse held it back? This ones a PCGS 64. And by all "measuring guides" etc for PL/DMPL it should have at least gotten the PL IMHO. In fact, another guy was checking it out at the LCS when I bought it (on the counter with my "pile to buy", lol) and he, I and the two shop workers all thought it was absolutely PL... But hey, my gain! Now if I could just get rid of that black smudge! (On a side note, I have a dragon privy reverse proof maple leaf ((slabbed)) with almost the same smudge in the same spot?)

I can not comment directly on the quality of the older ANACS holders with DMPL coins as I have not purchased any.

I recently crossed all my ANACS holders (none DMPL) to PCGS, so the biggest issue that I see with ANACS is that it can be difficult to cross the coin to NGC or PCGS as NGC does not cross any ANACS coins and PCGS is currently very stick on crossing DMPL. The grading standards in recent years appear to be have tighten on DMPL coins from both PCGS and NGC.

I think ANACS is waaayyy underrated, they're still my TPG of choice, even though I'm not a huge fan of the new slabs themselves. And for varieties and VAM's I think ANACS is the only choice. And I find the old small white slabs to be pretty accurate, both grade and designation wise, again they're bar none my favorite slabs to pick up. IMHO they do fine on PL/DMPL.... There's no questioning mine (I only have that one CC DMPL In a small white slab though) so they got that one right, lol.

Lol, it's no secret if you've known me in here for a while, that I'm not really a fan of TPG's at all, in fact I break out every coin unless it's an attributed variety AND valuable, or just straight up valuable..... Unless it's a small white slab, for some reason I really like those and just can't break them out. Heck, that CC DMPL I posted I think is easily undergraded, I think it's a lock at 64.... But I won't send it in because I like those darn slabs too much!
