Nice coin .. A good addition to any Jefferson collection.
I only have one ... but there are a couple members that have a few. And one member that has more than I could guess.

Well, I must be learning something, because I was going to say I'm pretty sure that's a Henning!

That one's actually in pretty nice shape with almost full rims.

The big question is, are all '44s without a mintmark a Henning nickel, or are there any known Greaser "pseudo-Hennings?" That would be a conversation starter coin to have!

Good question!
The piece I'm showing is pretty decent, except it does have that old obverse scratch.
I've seen a couple over the years on our local bidboard.
Somewhere in the last few years there was a great article in one of the coin mags with the full story.

Makes you wonder if those that were dumped in the river are still there.

I think that some people go there with metal detectors to try and find some that are still down there. Does anyone know how many he made and what the police did with all those fake nickels when they caught him?

Very cool! I've actually never owned one of these. I should fix that, as I have a propensity for contemporary counterfeits and enjoy coins of this period. Thanks for bringing it up and the reminder, Coinfrog!

Supposedly, the sheets of material he bought to punch his planchets were so close to being the correct composition that all of it was given to the mint who melted them down to tweek and reuse for official coinage.

I seem to recall reading that he dumped some 200,000 into the Schuykill alone, and that less than 15,000 of those were recovered. I can only think that they all must have been destroyed. Many others were dumped into a river in NJ. No doubt many of them are still there, long sunk in the mud.
