Oh, jeez, Fox, talk about beating the dead dogs to death, dude. No, ithe US Mint isn't going the way of Perth or the RCM anytime soon. You'd have better luck offshore getting a dogs/horses/cats series a.k.a. circus coins series commissioned through them than the US Mint.

Fox loves his half dollars. This will never change.
In my opinion, the only thing that could bring the half dollar back into circulation is the elimination of cents, nickels, and quarters.

Or the elimination of the 1 dollar bill. LOL

That will certainly help.

Well, jbuck, you know I also mentioned a possible "$2 coin" but we'd have to eliminate the $2 bill as well.

I would not complain if that happened. Coins: dime, half, dollar, two dollar. Notes: five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred. I know you want to mention the two hundred, but I feel it is necessary.

with JBuck. In a few years the $5 bill can be replaced with a coin as well.

I think it would be silly to put specific dogs on coins, but I'd be fine with a dog as a symbol or something. Then again, we already have the eagle as our animal so that might get confusing.
My vote is a return to symbolic liberty coinage. As much as I like animals on coins and love acquiring world coins with animals, I don't favor the US doing the same with our coinage.

I'd be all for some canine coins fox! I am so tired of coins that honor President's, political figures, and sports. I'd love to see some coins with canines on them (I'd love to see horses on some too :) ) If the mint ran a multi year run of different dogs, I'd buy em all. My two favorite modern commemoratives are the old mint and bald eagle commemoratives.

jbuck, you left some meat on the bone again. For example, besides the $200 bill, at least the $500 bill, if not the $1,000 bill again, as well. And we have to agree with n9jig about the $5 coin. The $10 bill should be the lowest banknote. Also, as much as I'd want it, if I can withstand no 2 cent coin, I suppose I could go without the 20 cent coin and use four dimes, seeing as dimes are even lighter and easier to use than one cent coins, plus I'm used to four one cent coins already, so why not four dimes?

Fox thanks for reminding me to take the ham out of the oven, it could have burned without your analogy! (seriously)

That's a good point Fox, it seems to make sense to just shift all denominations up by a factor of 10 and get rid of everything less than 10 cents.
Another alternative once advocated for in Canada would be to get rid of the cent and the nickel, and keep the quarter, etc. The twist is you would revalue the dime to 12.5 cents (1/8th of a dollar) overnight without any announcement beforehand. This surprise would prevent hoarding of dimes before the shift (except by government officials in the know).
Then you'd only need 3 dimes, not 4.

Quote: My vote is a return to symbolic liberty coinage. +1, the problem with having actual (dead) people on coins is that the series never ends. People view it as a sign of disrespect to remove a person from a coin. It's almost like saying that they're not important anymore. It's best not to put them on the coin to begin with. Or, if someone is put on a coin, have a definite end date within the law which requires a change back to a symbolic liberty figure.

Quote: with JBuck. In a few years the $5 bill can be replaced with a coin as well. True. We are basically shifting the decimal point anyway. If the dollar is the new dime, then the ten is the new dollar.
