Old because they have more history than a brand-new quarter.

I think most collectors like seeing a set of high grade
coins, I know I do. For me, my income level would not
let me collect older (classic) coin sets in high grade.
With the Presidents (modern coin) I can purchase them
in high grade, with out to much damage to my coin fund.

But of course I do like the classics. I do have some
classic sets, in different stages of completion. But
of course in more circulated grades. I do enjoy them
as well.

I am trying to create a very diverse collection.
I have coins from 323BC through 2015.

With a good showing of coins from
Ancients
Colonial
Civil war tokens
Great Britain
Canada
Mexico
Japan

and U.S. modern and classic coins

I collect what I like which could be of any date. Usually the newer the coin the more picky I am about it because they are newer, but I buy coins of any year.

New and old, because interesting errors and varieties are still happening! ANd it is the biggest rush to find a cool modern coin.

Also old because they carry an amazing story. They also look the prettiest.

But ikes are in a class of their own.

Well I like the old classic coins. you never know who held them in their hands. And love most all classic designs.
The new coins of today just don't do anything for me. Not that I don't have a few in my collection; because I do.

Looks like I'm the only person so far to answer "new" - I prefer modern coins because they are still in circulation, you can get a lot more of them for the same amount of money, and they are often more innovative (and I'm not talking about triple-enamel-glazed transparent-crystal-window real-action-figure-attached-with-every-purchase NIFC crap - there's lots of neat stuff in use today, like lateral images, microengraving, etc.). Also, I'm more acquainted with modern history.

I would collect old coins, but every time I have to make the choice I usually end up buying more modern issues instead.

I collect both. I have a bit of a larger focus on modern coins at the moment due to affordability. My preference is towards pre 1964 coins. My favorites kinds of coins to collect are odd types such as Half Cents, Two Cents, Three Cents, Half Dimes and Twenty Cent Pieces. When the funds become more plentiful I will be buying more than just one of those a year.

I collect all the modern series, but I also have some classic series and the 7070 as well. I also like getting new stuff from the mint.

I collect old and new coins but I do prefer the old. It is great to think about what this was used to buy, or maybe someone important carried it. I also love the history surrounding coins. They are tangible windows into the past.

I collect milled silver coins, made before the steam driven process, because of the unique variation of each coin and the testament to the minters art that could produce such nearly round and nearly perfect strikes.
