Could it be from a scratch on the hub that was used to make the die?

CoinMasters: I know you look through nickels, keep an eye out for this one and let me know if you ever find any.

I can't imagine mint inspectors not noticing this after the first inspection of a batch and rectifying it. I've also got another 2014 D error I'll post later. Seems quality control slipped a bit last year. I've got a whole box of 2014 D nickels that I was going to return to the bank, but after finding some anomalies in my area I'd better take a look at them

You bet, Blue. It's already on my agenda after seeing your post. I always said you have a good memory. I do branch to other coins some, but nickels (and lately pennies) dominate.

Thanks CoinMasters : ) Good luck
I try to branch out occasionally, I've picked up a few boxes of pennies. It's a trade off how you spend your time looking. With nickels there's errors + War Nickels with a smaller chance of finding a doubled die since it seems there are so few. Pennies there are wheats, errors, rpms, double dies, etc, but for some reason I can't stick to them for very long. I guess I love finding those War Nickels and I have a monopoly on nickels in my area. All the tellers let me know that other collectors pick up pennies but I'm the only one that gets nickels. ; )

If they were a hub issue, there would be a lot of dies that had the same issue. I don't think that is the case?

Coop: Could they have realized the error and canceled all dies until they polished the line out and removed that specific hub from creating new dies? I'm unfamiliar with how the mint replaces dies, all at once or individually as they break down.

Also, I'll be posting my second 2014 D error in an hour.

If the ejection process ejects the coins in a straight line, I'm starting to lean that way. If that's the case, it would be PSD.

Since the pattern is the same on all the coins, I am thinking it would have to be something on the die. If it were an ejection issue, the pattern would change with each one, wouldn't it?

cwb: Exactly what I was thinking. Also, the ejection force should not be great enough to dig into the coin? Not sure if this helps but the coins are not damaged on the rim on either end of the line.

That makes me think it's not the hub, unfortunately I don't know the ejection process.

Trying to get the pictures right for the other 2014. Again, I'm not sure what caused it

Just a thought, if it was the Hub, and they did produce the dies maybe they just decided to polish them after and one got missed
