Welcome back... I'm in the same boat you are. There are periods during the winter where I've gone 4 days without power at a time. You learn to wear lots of layers indoors as well!

Glad you're back.
The last few times we were without power, my husband hooked up the WiFi to a car battery. (He has just informed me that it was a little more complicated than that!) At least we could get online to see weather maps. One does grow weary of huddling in the basement.

We got my 12 yo daughter a relatively nice Motorola smartphone with a unlimited minutes/texts and a small amount of internet service for only $19 a month. Phone was $15 + shipping (refurbished). Smartphones aren't very expensive anymore unless you need the latest Apple/Samsung, etc.

An easy option for limited power during an outage is a car battery jump starter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Battery-Jum...151689413146Most of them now have a USB plug in it along with the jumper cables, air compressor, and an emergency light. You just have to keep it charged for when you need it.

Hi John - extended periods without power can really wear on a person. I happen to be on the smallest grid in town; literally the last house on the grid. Last one to be restored when the storms take their tolls.
Welcome back - we missed having you around!

LOL - I completely understand. Keys here. Shoes there. Belts there. If I put things in an odd location, I'm not right until 'balance' is restored!

4 days without power is quite some time. Glad you had a generator to save your food. Forget the internet, obviously in that situation there are other pressing needs.
Welcome back
