I'm sure with some pictures of the coins, the membership here can point you in the right direction and recommend where to sell.

I must admit, I cringe when you say most are from US Commemorative Gallery and the American Mint. These types of operations generally tend to have very high profit margins on their "products" and the collector will likely not realize anywhere near what they paid if they resell into the secondary market.

The painted coins are actually considered a bad thing to do to a coin. It adds no value. Although a soak in acetone removes the paint. There may be peopleon ebay who would go for it, but I have a feeling it would not go for more than silver content. Normally the Walking Liberty one oz. coins (called American Silver Eagles or ASEs) bring a premium over silver spot prices.

As to gold plated coins - again - nothing special. So little gold it makes no difference in price.

State Quarters - unless the special, mint-issued silver ones - are worth a quarter.

Quote:

They came from the US Commemorative Gallery. I admit, I don't even know where to look, but I can't find an indication of where they were minted. Were they just put out by the Gallery?

When you google US Commemorative Coin Gallery you come up with a website that gives you very little value for the prices they charge. I fear, from the painted coins, the half dollar rolls , etc., this gentleman was thinking he was getting valuable collectibles, but like a lot of people, was likely spending way more than the pieces could ever be worth. I see on the website right now , for example, they are selling rolls of Kennedy halves for 39.00 each. So you get 10.00 worth of coin for 39.00 and shipping.

Although since 2002 the halves made by the mint have not been for general circulation, they are also not hard to find - search ebay for tons of them. And I also have found over 300 of these in bank rolls when looking through boxes of halves.

Although I looked just now and saw see on ebay rolls 2011a selling for 20.00 - so a chance, maybe to double the money. But seeing as these are not marked from the mint, but e third party, I don;t know if people will pay that much b/c mint rolls were packaged at the mint and may contain some halves in very nice condition. The rolls you have may might not be uncirculated coins (hence small marks and nicks on them from circulation). I know if I wanted a good roll of these, I would go for a US mint roll.

I hope this all helps. Keep the questions coming

I would recommend ebay Kathy. As long as you have good pictures and accurate descriptions for your coins, you will get a market price. If you do not want to spend the time, I suggest finding a local coin club. Most coin collectors are honest people and would be more than happy to help you. Or perhaps someone from this board can direct you to an honest dealer/coin shop in your area.

Hey, I thank you all SO much! It's actually nice to know I'm not holding (except for possibly something in those penny & nickel rolls) anything that's of any value.
It's kind of like something I went through a couple years ago when Rex's (my gentleman's) son, Eric, died, and I was put in charge of emptying his apartment. Eric had worked for the Embassy in Romania for ten years, and when I went through his stuff, I found a lot of Romanian money, and one bill that had a face value of $1 million! Did some research on-line and found that particular bill had been devalued to $1.00 in 2005. I found it in Eric's luggage in 2013. I think I still have it around here somewhere.
Anyway, thanks to all of you, I'm not going to worry about anything I have here too much. When I get to those rolls of old pennies and nickels I'll post pictures, and you can tell me what you think.
You are an awesome group! Makes me kind of wish I had an interest in coins. Thanks again.

Kathy. I like to first thank you for helping the Elderly friend. Having work in the field of Senior care, I have great respect for those that takes care of our Seniors.

I wish I had some good news about the collection, but unfortunately I don't. From what little information I have gather, most coin collectors will have very little interest in these coins. The Local coin shop will offer close to nothing over face value or Silver bullion spot prices.

If these were my coins, I would use ebay.

not sure on returns of sales but I would take my chances with these.
Good luck
John

Welcome aboard, Kathy!

There are a number of companies who specialize in taking common, inexpensive and/or well worn coins, repackaging and/or coloring them (including plating them with minuscule amounts of silver, gold or platinum) and then selling them to ignorant consumers as something rare, valuable and collectible.

Sadly, there are also a number of ignorant consumers out there who buy this stuff, sometimes spending their entire life's fortune and/or their children's inheritances in the process.

Most of the stuff isn't completely worthless (a quarter is always going to be worth at least $0.25 no matter what you do with it), but plating a common quarter in gold and sticking it in a plastic case doesn't suddenly make it worth $10. Or $0.26, for that matter. And the same is true for well-worn, common date examples of classic coins that really have no intrinsic value above melt value (if silver) or face value (if not).

All of which is to say you can probably get some money out of all of this stuff, but probably nowhere near what the original owner thought he or she could.

johntookit, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm an Army vet, and spent 20 years (I'm retired now) as the Veterans Service Officer for Monroe County. Rex, my elderly gentleman, is a veteran of both WWII (Navy torpedoman in the Pacific) and Korea (Army paratrooper). His sons live in MA and NC, and aren't available to help him with what needs to be done here. I've been a friend of the family for 10 years, and feel an obligation to do it, aside from the fact that his older son, his POA, has tasked me with the job. How do I manage to get into these situations? LOL!

Hello from a fellow vet (I was in the Air Force). Honestly, if you are looking for a quick sale of the collection, the best route is to find a reputable local coin collecting shop and have them take a look at what you got.

to CCF Kathy and best of luck with your task you've taken on. I do agree with the rest that pictures would go a long way in helping you with anything that would have any value.

If you don't want to take the collection in to a dealer for a valuation, we recommend to our customers to spread the collection out, take 12 high quality photos of the coins, provide a list of what you have (like you did in your forum post) then post on Craigslist for buyers to email their best offer or ebay starting at the lowest price you'd accept. The sky is the limit on what you can receive for the collection.
