Both of those coins are pretty cool. A lot of times we'll see a one-sided punch that leaves a divot, but this is pretty neat. Agreed with jbuck... vise or hammer job with two dies.

Back a few years ago on ebay someone was selling a complete set of Jefferson nickels he modified in a similar manner. He had a hand press with an upper and lower die that he inserted the nickel between. I do not remember the exact message on the nickel - but it was something political for a a presidential candidate I think (Romney?). He wanted 1000.00 but I don't think it sold.

Edited to ad: The link jbuck posted shows one of the nickels - it was for Ron Paul and "End The Fed" was on the REV

As I was reading your post I remembered it was in that thread and was getting ready to go find it, but I am glad you noticed it first.

2008 was last year for memorial reverse. In 2009 there were 4 different reverse designs.

Reverse is normal for that year, except for counterstamp of course.

Ah, okay, but I am sure the OP was referring to the counterstamp.

I was thinking maybe OP was not aware of 2009 Bicentennial cents

Nice counterstamp!

"but how did they completely change the reverse?"
I read it the same way Tunnioc did. OP wasn't familiar with the 2009 reverse. Not a lot of them circulating, new collector might not have seen one in change.

Lol, I was not aware of the bi-centennial cent! I truly thought that someone had changed the whole reverse. This does clear up a few things...

How have I missed these coins all these years?

Wow, never would have imagined that was what you meant.

Then again, my office mate just realized a week or two ago that they were making a new Star Wars film, so things can get by us sometimes.

I resemble that remark.

Then again, I don't watch TV - don't even have Netflix.
Entertainment is normally (don't laugh) research...anything and everything.

I found out about the new movie through a Gizmag email.
