Been there, done that! Yes, the prices are too high. The coins sent "on approval", generally are too worn to be of any value, ,(other than hole fillers). The coins you order, I the higher grades are pretty good, but maybe a bit ovef gaded. I like their way of doing business, but the prices could come down, and the gedaes given dropped at least one number. Dick

Littleton: I was a member more than 10 years ago in my earlier collecting days. I think their prices were way too high and some of the coins I got from them were heavily polished (like a 45 Mercury dime and 37 Buffalo nickel). Most of the stuff they sent me, I sent back. After a couple of months of me not buying anything, they stopped sending stuff to me. It was a good experience, because of the hassle-free part of it, but high prices and some coins being heavily cleaned turned me off.

The only time I order from Littleton, is when I need coin supplies. When it comes to their coins and sets, they are a bit over priced. I am always pleased when I order supplies from them.

I remember about less than 10 years ago, as I just started to collect coins, I received some of their coins that they sent out so you can buy or return. Remember I was just a beginning collector, and I got a 1907 Indian cent for $4.95 in G-4 condition.. at that price I would have probably got one in much better condition or got a G cent for less than a dollar... what a ripoff.

Let me add my 3 ceents worth (inflation?) I have ordered some supplies from Littleton in the past. The main dealer I use by mail has their supplies for less than Littleton charges. Their coin prices are waaay too high. Their main audience, though, isn't the experienced coin collector. When they use such phrases as "collector-preferred" for uncirculated, and "layered in precious 24k gold" , it is clear to me that they are aiming for a much more general public than the true numismatist. When I stopped approval service from them, I pointed out that their prices were anywhere from 3 to 4 times RedBook on very common coins. I am fully aware that RedBook is not a price list, but it is a general guide. I got back a rather snippy letter from them, but they stopped the approvals.

I did my stint with LCC for a couple of years in the early 80's. Many of my common date Wheaties and buffaloes were bought from their approval service. It fit my tween-age budget as each shipment was cheap enough for me to buy and fill holes. I felt they were a little overpriced, but buying such a small volume of coins from another dealer would not be any cheaper considering the minimum S&H charge would increase the total cost. At least that is how I saw it then.

I would like to echo the message of jbuck.
In the 60's and 70's I bought all kind of stuff from Littleton. So I was a kid in the 1960's and the CRAZY company called Littleton would send me coins (and also stamps) on approval). There were no credit credit checks, etc. I bought all kinds of stuff. Turns out the coins were the best investment.

Every now and then I purchase coins and coin supplies from them. I buy their albums because I prefer the look of them over the Dansco albums. I find that most of their prices are running close to what I am paying at my local coin shop. For example A 2008 SAE is going for $26 from Littleton and from my local coin shop it is going for $23. I like the convenience of ordering and having it show up at my door. I don't always have time to go to the store to pick something up.

One thing good about Littleton is the tour you can take. I live about 1.5 hours from there. Though I have never bought anything from them

My only complaint about them is that when I bought paper money from them on approval back in the '60's and '70's, it was folded in the approval envelope. You can all imagine what "unciruculated" paper money that is folded in three places is worth....... :) Oh well.
