...at least I am not the fool paying 5X face for bronze cents thinking I will be able to sell them for scrap copper prices.
I may well be a fool, but there are a few things I know. Among them are...
1. It is illegal to buy or sell United States cents for the purpose of reclaiming the metals
2. Pre 1982 United States cents are not copper but a high grade bronze
3. Scrap copper is purchased in grades often as #1 and #2 which are far below the listed spot price. Bronze and Brass are purchased at even less.
So even if legal to sell them for scrap the spot price would need to be somewhere around 8 or 10 times face to make buying bronze cents at 5X face profilable.
So in this reality "10 dollars of pre 1982 pennies go for 50 bucks" is foolishness.

I think you can do a 70 pound flat rate box for 5.75 , not bad. That's a lotta cents.

Tryna, I've read most of those things before, and I agree. I passively save copper cents I come in contact with, but I don't really hoard. What you said about pre '82 cents being bronze is interesting though, could you elaborate?

oops, that was a dumb question considering theres google:
Brass - is mainly an alloy that consists of copper with zinc added. Brasses can have varying amounts of zinc or other elements added. These varying mixtures produce a wide range of properties and variation in color. Increased amounts of zinc provide the material with improved strength and ductility. Brass can range in color from red to yellow depending on the amount of zinc added to the alloy.
So the 5% zinc in a pre '82 cent takes the scrap value down a notch or two? I've seen some videos on youtube of guys making copper bars from copper cents (which of course is illegal). I'm not sure if the melting it burns off any of the zinc but I thought it was interesting. It'll be interesting to see what happens if they ever lift the melting ban

Saving 95% copper cents is for the long term. No one is going to get rich from them now. My goal is more to save them from eventual melting. I do not really pay much attention to the dates or varieties now. It will give me and or my son something to do in the future.

Bronze is an alloy that consists primarily of copper.so with that said. I'm SELLING COPPER. So, Tryna if your suggesting I'm a fool for SELLING copper cents for 5x face value then I'm fine with that! Also I have never suggested to my customers what they should do with the copper cents. In fact its the only thing I have sold without having to give a reason for why someone should buy it. But thanks for shoving it to me.

Guess it depends on how much you are shipping at a time? Saw this for bulk searching how to mail copper pennies on google http://coincollectingenterprises.co...s/boxes-mailif you're doing 10 pounds or less, looks will fit in a small flat rate box. Sure, you're helping put usps out of business putting so much weight in a flat rate box. But then again, they're already going out of business.

Zbcoins: I actually don't think tryna was calling you a fool at all. I don't want to speak on another person's behalf... but the way I read it was that the "fool" is not the one selling something at 5x face... but the person buying something as common and easily attainable as a copper cent for 5 x face.
Once again I can't say for certain that's what the other member was saying but it certainly comes across that way.

Copper is not a precious metal. If you're hoarding it I hope you've got space to store it by the ton because otherwise you're not going to make much money.

I have used the Small Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for shipping bulk Wheaties, that box will comfortably hold 1500 cents. There is one caveat to make sure your shipment arrives in one piece- before folding the cardboard into a box, reinforce the inside with packing tape and thoroughly tape all edges and seams once the box is assembled and packed.
