It probably is a real 1916 Mercury dime, probably one with a added mintmark, as kanga says 1916d is one of the most faked coins out there like the 93s Morgan etc. if it isn't in a PCGS or NGC holder I'd pass.....the odds of it being legit are slim to none....

I've been comparing closely and it seems the D is a bit off in position and I think size too ?

Quote: I've been comparing closely and it seems the D is a bit off in position and I think size too ? You are correct. The D is too large. A 10,000 Euro coin if genuine and they only want 200? Okay.....move on.

Mintmark definitely looks wrong. The price too should be a major red flag. A 16d in about good condition sell for 300-400+ and I've seen G06 sell for upwards of $1000. If it was a genuine and slabbed coin in the condition you posted that's a $5000+ coin easily. No one would take that big of a loss on a real coin.
I have 2 or 3 altered mintmark 16D's in my black cabinet. When I get home I'll take a picture of them.

The mintmark look added to me. Only buy one of these if it is in a reputable TPG holder.

If only there were places there that could authenticate that coin. Otherwise, just to many fakes of that coin around.

dohcollector, with all the fake coins and all the fake slabs out there it gets frustrating.
I think the best thing for anyone who is unsure is to do exactly what you did -- post a pic and get opinions. It also helps the rest of us to learn to spot the fakes.

I think dohcollector is one smart cookie, asking advise instead of taking the bait.
Way to go, dohcollector!

@carl there is 2 companies but never done that its ether in paris (PCGS) and then you have NGC in munich germany but to be honest its quite expensive and I don't know how to fill out the pdf form in a good way..(you can laugh thats ok) so thats keeping me back from incapsulating my expensive/rare coins
@ buddy yeah its actually very frustrating...but it seems I got you guys to fall back on :D
Conder yeah it is..sounded to good to be true
lol @Steele
Parklane yeah good thing I did !and I APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP AND THOUGHTS !!
noo need Sel its a added mint if it would of been in a better position like the real thing it would of been harder to spot

Dohcollector. Regarding your hesitation on sending coins in for grading. I have used both companies, and pleased with the service of both. Considering you being fairly close to Paris, why not make a trip down there when they have their graders flown in. That combined with a platinum membership and getting 8 free grades (not sure if that is applicable to Europe though) would br a good idea. You get them back in 3 Days, no shipping fees back and forth.
Yes, it is quite pricy, but I think more and more European collectors see the advantages of having the coins graded and authenticated. As the market has grown with the internet, more and more transactions are made withought getting to hold the actual coin before the purchase is made.
If the coins you have are expensive and rare, why not take the fees and see them as a part of your investment in the coin instead for as an expense.
