Note in THIS case, the Cud is not just on the Rim, but actually extends a fair way onto the FACE! Most other rim Cuds I've seen pics of, the Cud only exists on the RIM (Like your image above).

So, what is the process that casues a rim Cud?

Well a quite well respected collector explained it to me this way.
The most likely cause of these is the die clashing with the collar eventually causing a die break on the rim area of the die.
Take note of the $1 and $2 ones, you find, and you will notice, most of them overlap the edge reeding and as the reeding goes into the coin it would be sticking out on the collar making it an easy target for the dies to hit.
,
Hope this helps Zaggy

We should be paid by the banks / mints to take these coins out of circulation. Imagine the state of the country if we did not do this. All vending machines would be jammed, the bank tellers would be forever counting coins that were rejected by the auto counting machine. Shops would be on the phone to customer care at the banks asking if the coins were valid...

To some people this is a full time job. I only do it part-time, albeit with a lot of overtime at weekends ;-)
