Grading is always a matter of opinion not a matter of fact. IMO this coin coin is VG10

Sometimes the denomination (and composition) of the coin comes into play (which can only complicate DBM's very valuable point mentioned above). If your coin was a 1-cent, with that level of wear, it probably would be VG, if it was a 5-cent, then VG-10, but if that was a silver 50-cent, it most likely would get a F-12 grade, here is an example: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1931-Canada-...361423159596

Here's an ICCS graded example on ebay. Again, just an opinion, but their opinion is one that sells coins. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NFLD-1918C-5...AOSw7ThUf2bp Check ebay for ICCS graded newfoundland coins. For selling your collection they will be the standard of grading of worn (circulated) coins you will want to emulate.

Great points on grading in this thread which can be expanded upon with a grading book such as, Guide for Grading Coins of Canada by Andre Langlois. I would have called this VG10 for my collection.

The coin of SPP's example is a Canadian 50cent not a Newf. Grading standards are different for the two. Wear apparent on George, graded f12 Canadian, would only grade VG10 Newfoundland. This fact is supported by The Standard Grading Guide For Canadian Coins and by viewing many ICCS graded 50cents.

Great info!! Thank you.
So when it comes to rim nicks and scratches... this doesn't affect the grade right? But affects the value and should be moted. Am I correct?

I'm gonna give thus a try. This is a 1917 Newfoundland 25 cent coin. I am going to grade it as a FINE... am I correct? Or is it strong enough to be VF? This is actually a lot of fun. Never thought I'd enjoy coins as much as I have the last couple of days :)

I would grade that at F15 myself.

The last coin looks like a VF-20 to me but, would like to see the reverse.

Hi all. I'm new on here but not new to Newfoundland coin collecting. I'd give this last a F12 at best imo. Cheers
