is it a proof?

I have collected coins all my life, but just recently got hooked and really started collecting...

I don't know enough about it to recognize a proof in circulation from that long ago!

to CCF. It looks like a polished or plated coin for jewlery not a proof.

The mint quit making proof coins in 1942 and didn't resume until 1950. I'm going to go with the plated idea, although silver can be polished to look like this. The Jefferson nickels were made with 35% silver from mid 1942 through 1945 so nice find either way.

Regardless of availability, the lack of detail and full strike are enough to eliminate it as a proof.

that it's just polished/plated. Still, a War Nickel in change is a great find even if it's damaged!

Appears as if it might have been whizzed which is a soft high speed polishing.

High speed polishing or plated , the only 2 alternatives.

I agree

Polished.

I see these quite often at the LCS.

Some polishing compound and a buffing wheel or
dremel tool with a cloth polishing bit

easy to make them this shiny

Huh, I have one that looks almost EXACTLY like yours. I've never posted it because I thought it was buffed like others are mentioning. I'll post mine to this thread in a couple days if I remember (and if I can find it lol)

Really bad plating job IMO. Filled in the details on Monticello.

I think there was some polishing/buffing involved. Perhaps that and plating?
