There's no problem with the coin or the holder that I can see. Those holograms come off all the time and it does not effect value. Rough seams on NGC slabs are normal as well.

This holder was in use sometime between 1996 - 2000. In 2001 the NGC name was added to the front of the label. The older holders are often in and out of dealer cases and the holders get scratched and the hologram on the back can get damaged.

What about the coin itself? Do you at least agree with the assigned grade?

IMO you have every right to be upset. 1) it's not the TPG you bought 2) you say it's tampered with 3) the hologram is torn off. As others said it was probably due to a dealers sticker on it but they should have disclosed that You spend close to $400 so you can and should be picky! I avoid buying from the major guys like provident, APMEX, etc. their prices always seem high. |

Thing I noticed was that the images you provided look like a nice 62. They are small pics though. EDIT: Don't buy numismatic coins through bullion companies like APMEX or Provident. Edited by BH1964

Auction houses are well known to use a strong adhesive for their Lot labels. As others have noted the NGC hologram is on the outside of that generation holder, thus susceptible to damage from those pesky auction house labels. I have a few damaged hologram NGC slabs.

The grade looks right to me and the coin looks good. It's just that the "total package" isn't what I paid for or had in mind when buying. The coin sold for $350 but that's the cash price and is why I paid closer to $370.
Providents customer service is more than a little lacking but the representative did say that eventually I would be getting a return label. I'll just see how it goes. I made this post out of frustration and I'm still frustrated but thanks for talking it out with me :)

I agree with your decision to return the coin.
If your not happy with it now, you won't be happy later.
The seller should have listed good details about the condition
of the holder, when there is problems like this one has.
And they should have gotten it right NGC ..not PCGS

The slab is an NGC 6 and was used from 1995 to 1997. The holograms used before 1997 were easily damaged by auction and dealer price stickers. For those people who actually try to collect the different varieties of holders, those early slabs are hard to find with undamaged holograms.
For those who don't care about the holder there is typically no loss of value due to the damaged label.

Nothing wrong with the coin, it appears. The NGC hologram on the reverse on that type of slab typically wears off from frequent friction... I've seen that on numerous examples. Can't tell if the slab is otherwise damaged/messed with, so from what I can see, the slab condition doesn't surprise me.

Finally today I got the coin I paid for. That's over two weeks to get the right coin. I immediately shipped the coin back but they were both slow at getting to my package and shipping back out. This was my first purchase with Provident and by the things that happened and some of the stuff they told me, they're just too big of a company for little buyers like me. I'll be sticking with JM for now and I'll just be happy it all ended up working out.
