If you don't want to dig up the tabs and bottle caps you need to find some virgin land that hasn't seen people in 100 or more years. Easier said then done YES, but I'm sure their out there.

Took me about a year and a switch from a $1,000 detector to an older unit that cost less than half, and I hit close to 70 old silvers and other oldies that second year, most from hard-hit public spots. I then discovered the art of door knocking, which opened up hundreds of opportunities.

Well, the particular town I live in was founded in 1858 and it's extremely rural. Besides the farms and minor deforestation the ground is pretty undisturbed.

don't count out the Bounty Hunter Platinum Pro. It is a great little machine.
I own one of these as well as an AT-Pro.
The at Pro uses 15 khz freq. the BHP uses a 7.5khz freq. The lower frequencies are better for gold.

hey, newbie here. I started reading through prior to starting a new post...good info through these threads. I live down in the south west part of the states, lots of cowboy action many a moon ago here in Arizona!

I have thought about picking up a metal detector but really can not fund the "fancy" ones some members have.

also, ive never seen anyone in Az using one come to think about it lol, this may be a good thing, but there is so much land being dug up and being built on...besides walking around where old buildings and fields used to be I think I'm going to have to run the out skirts for good findings perhaps.

i found this on sale locally:

http://www.big5sportinggoods.com/st....WBDgRCRH3IU

or

http://www.cabelas.com/product/hobb...9A&gclsrc=ds

there are some others around the same price range, what could one come to expect from an entry level unit such as this one? adventures or frustrations?

thx!

You would definitely be upgrading soon after purchasing one of those.

I know I would not recommend those.
I stick by my first post.

I would search ebay for good used ones.

I would recommend you save your money for an AT-Pro they can be had for less then $500.00
If not that then a Bounty Hunter Pro Platinum or an ACE 350 or even a Fisher F4. Both those machines are equivalent, but the BH, has more features then the ACE 350.

BTW.. Both Fisher and Bounty Hunter Brand names are owned by First Texas.

BTW... btw.. I have found quarters 10 inches down on the beach using my BH Pro.
I won a BH Pro Platinum and a AT-Pro

Just picked up one of those Harbor Freight jobbers for our son's 9th birthday. We live near the beach in Southeast GA. He wants to try it there. Hoping we might find something since Matthew just mixed things a bit. Didn't want to take a plunge on a more expensive model, until we see how he(we) takes to it. Can't wait to try it.

Ed, I started out about the same age as your son and this was back about 1972.
My folks gave me a Jetco Mustang for my birthday. One knob and off/on switch. I remember I didn't find much, but it hooked me for life. Good luck!

I've always wanted to get into metal detecting (treasure hunter mentality) and recently got a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. The reviews seemed good for a novice and mostly it's simple! Two knobs for sensitivity and descrimination, a useless gauge and one switch. I haven't gotten to test it out yet, so I can't say how it'll be, but for $85 on ebay, it was worth a shot to see if I like it.

Welcome here Spruett001. One of two things will happen, either you will become more interested in the hobby and will soon want to upgrade machines, or you will lose all interest and the BH will sit in the closet and collect dust. Good luck.

I look forward to hearing all about your hunts and how you like your detectors! I want to get one myself one of these days, but I haven't figured out which one. I want to start reasonably cheap until I know I'll keep going, but not so much so that I'll want to upgrade too soon.
I heard that not only do you need a detector, but it is also a good idea to get something called a "pinpointer" too.

I plan to attend a meeting of a local metal detector club sometime when I am in the state when they have a hunt, and ask if I could see a few different machines in person.
Maybe one of them will be ready to upgrade, and I can get a good used starter machine.
