Sorry for your loss Celtic. I'm sure we'd all rather receive a stash like that while our loved ones are the ones handing it over. But at least folks knew enough to put them in your direction for safe keeping.

I hope you have a few 'fun finds' in the lot; you never know. Looking forward to seeing a few!

Thanks for the kind sentiments and thoughts, everyone. I appreciate it.

Home now and getting back into the swing of things; will probably get some time this weekend to sort through the pile (after mowing the lawn and catching up on other chores, of course).

@Cascade - yeah, thought about mailing them Priority but between my carry-on and my checked bag, I managed it. . Note to anyone who decides to fly with large masses of change like that, security will check your carry-ons and checked bags when they see that large mass of metal.

Anything unusual will gain attention. Having carried odd prototype equipment in my carry on bag, the three foot frozen kielbasa gained the most attention flying out of O'Hare.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your family member.
That is always a tough time.

Good to hear your back home.

When you get around to checking all the coins out,
I am sure many of us will like to hear what is there.

Thanks, GR58.

Here's a shot of the stash after a quick sort.

2 big Ziplock bags full of wheaties in the middle, and a small blue plastic container with more. Quite a bit of silver and a few foreign (mostly Canadian) coins. After very quickly looking at some of the dates on those wheaties, I think I'll be lucky to get one earlier than the 40s. Oh well, it'll still be fun to search. I'll post results as I have them.

Going through my parents coins, the search was more fun than the finding. I could wonder about the stories snd speculate on why they kept this coin over that one.

@Shiny - you're right, I am having good fun going through these coins and wondering about their history. I also have a great story lugging them back from the east coast.

Have fun! What is the paper currency you got folded up there?

@Mont - alas, it's just a well-circulated 2003 $2. Seems to be the theme for this pile.

Quick update. I've sorted the coins into decades. without counting it feels like I sorted 1 - 1.5 boxes. A few notes:

1. There were no 1909s. None. ()*&!^(* but no big surprise there.
2. There were no 1922s. Also no surprise.
3. I did get enough 30's (perhaps 150) to (hopefully) complete my "from circulation" 30's collection.
4. I found some hole fillers for the '20s (from about 30 beat-up examples).
5. And the '10's (about 15 ragged survivors)

Considering I sorted about 2500 Wheat cents, this seems to me about what I should expect.

But part of me thinks this pile was previously searched since everything of remote interest was in such lousy shape.

Who knows?

Regardless, this has been fun, interesting and a good mortality check.
