I would look for the highest quality example you can find in your price range, and then choose whatever you like the style of the best.

I second the Vespasian for historical significance, and you should be able to find a decent one for that.

Wow, all are exceptional. I especially love those flow lines on the Antoninus Pius.

All have great portraits and strong reverses. I do not think you could go wrong choosing any one of those. It is all down to your preference. With a few of those you would be on your way to a very nice "5 good emperors" set. This includes, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius.

How nice to have good choices from which to pick! Not my current area of interest, but hese all look wixked nice. I'd probably grab the Marcus Aurelius and think about breaking it out of the slab so that I could hold it in my hand. It is nice to feel the weight of that history.

I agree, that slab would have a rather short meeting with my hammer.

There is so much choice out there!! ,and yes I've been looking at the 5 good emperors. I think I'll go for a Trajan to start the 4th...RIC II 118 Primarily because of where he was born here in Spain...and secondly the proudness and strength of his bust !! I would've followed this guy! @Bob L...I agree the Antoninus is beautiful and my 1st choice but it is stretching me this month if it's there next month it will be my next buy!! Thanks to everyone for their input believe me I took it all in!

An attractively patinated ancient coin is not sensitive to handling, such as modern proof coins are.
If you buy the slabbed coin, it should be broken out and put in a 2x2, so that it can be fully attributed and so that the purchase information with date can be noted. Can't do that with a slabbed coin, and the slab would be at odds with the rest of the storage and display of all of the other of your ancient coins.
All of my ancients are in 2x2's. The more valuable ones are in a square of clear acetate plastic sheet, inside the 2x2. The clear acetate was cut from a food storage container.
Acetate plastic sheet will not harm coins in any way. I have used this material inside 2x2's for over 30 years, with zero detrimental effect on any of them.

Hi ....Well here's the coin I decided on...Due to his link with Spain and birthplace of Italica near Sevilla it's only about 5hrs from me so I plan to visit there this summer!......and my next coin will probably be a Hadrian! Trajan 98-117 AD denarius RICII 118 Minted in Rome between 103-111 dia 20mm 2.66 grams Obverse-IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC PM TRP Laureate bust right, draped far shoulder Reverse-COS V PP SPQR OPTIMO PRINC Aequitas standing left holding scales and cornucopiae I'm amazed at the amount of information put on these coins! Obverse..IMP = Imperator (emperor) TRAIANO = Trajan AVG = Augustus,The name of the first emperor bestowed upon him by the senate in 27BC.It became a title for all successive emperors GER = Germanicus DAC = Dacicus.....Defeater of the Germans and the Dacians PM = PONTIFEX MAXIMUS..Highest priest, once conferred was held for life TRP = TRIBUNICIA POTESTATE..Tribune of the Roman people, literally the representative of the people in government Reverse...COS = CONSUL,chief magistrate of the Roman government,2 were appointed each year V = 5 TIMES, number of times appointed as Consul PP = PATER PATRIAE,father of his country SPQR = SENATUS POPULUS QUE ROMANUS,The senate and the Roman people OPTIMO PRINC = To the highest prince COMPARED TO COINS HERE IN SPAIN NOW.... Obverse = 1 euro Reverse = Espana 2001.....
