Quote: Well they often do, but they tend to blame the LCS for trying to rip them off. Indeed! How about the "Gold Buffalo Tribute Proof"? I just saw that same, old tired commercial a couple of weeks ago. 100% legal deception, buyers have no recourse, they say "copy", they say it's only a couple milligrams of "gold plating" etc. I'm sure many of these have showed up at dealers who refused to even buy the things.

You get EXACTLY what you pay for when you buy from HSN. They show you a coin, they tell you about it, they give you a price, they give you a 30 day money back guarantee. YOU decide, YOU pay, You get exactly what you paid for. Where is the scam? The internet generation both irks and amuses me. Anybody trying to run a business is a thief. Anybody who tries to sell anything for more than some guy on $bay, whose total overhead consists of a 4yr old Dell and the $50 a month he pays his parents for a room in the basement and internet access, is a thief and a scammer. Anyone want to sell ASE's for $5 over spot? Oh yeah ....... and try to run a cable TV network with the profits ......... anyone? There are at least 100 threads on this forum going about counterfeits, how to buy on $bay and not get ripped off and "I'm scared to buy coins, there are so many scammers and counterfeiters out there" Or "I want to buy gold but it is so expensive" People buy from HSN not only because they are uninitiated, but because they know they are not getting a counterfeit coin, they know they have 30 days to return it (I'm sure every $bay seller is happy to refund your money if you change your mind) and you can finance your purchase through flex payments. This is why HSN is in business and stays in business. It is not just ignorant people too embarrassed to complain. By the way Mike Mezack has his own coin show on CSN. Everything is 20%-30% cheaper without all the commissions he has to pay HSN.

Proof sets are a work of art. It's hard to feel sorry for people who are too lazy to get off their duffs and check ebay for the same thing.

People don't realize how expensive TV time can be and why you pretty much have to sell at 200% or more of regular price.
It may have changed but the way it used to be the networks starts off getting 25% of the gross. So if you have a coin you paid $70 for that you would normally sell for $100, and you sell it for $200, the network gets $50 and your down to $150. Still sound pretty good? well you still have to pay for the air time (no the network fee doesn't pay for that), the studio rental, and at least one director, one lighting man, and electrician, at least two cameramen, a sound technician,a stage hand or two, the order takers, and the on air talent, all at union wage rates. 200% of retail may not let you break even, and you are going to have to move a lot of product.

They are however, transparent in their offering and price, and provide better customer support that the basement priced folks. This is not a scam, it's great marketing.

At least the dreck is real. If HSN sells "1000 rare Barber quarters over 100 years old" it means scouts raided dealer's 2x2 boxes all over the country to accumulate them in the appropriate grade and cost.

I some time have some of the same feelings about people that sale on ebay. each and every person has the price in there mind they want or need for said coin. it just amazes me the different prices for the same coin. but its my coin - I can ask that price

BTW, selling on ebay costs you a minimum of 13% + shipping. Selling on ebay with 20% margins is a slow way to go bankrupt. This is why you pay at least 25% more on ebay than at a show. That's the cost of shopping from your couch.

Any numbers to support that Andrew? I typically find much better deals on ebay than at the coin shop (not sure about shows). With that said you can't simply log into ebay and buy something.. It takes a lot of patience.

I am an ebay seller. ebay charges you 10% as a sellers fee and Paypal charges you 2.8%. Shipping is extra. All this can be verified on their site. Whatever deals you can get on ebay. I can do at least 25% better at a show, in general. Coin shops have even higher markups than ebay as their overhead is even higher.

Good to know about the shows. I'll have to keep looking to see if one ever comes in my area.. sounds like that is the best place to find a deal!

To be fair, the only differential should be the 15% or so that ebay and paypal takes. On coins < $100, it will cost you another 3-5% to ship. This bring the difference to nearly 20%. Also in negotiating face to face, I find you can generally save another 5-10%.
