My local store got to sell quite a few Eagles and Morgans to a friend because he was polite to me when I picked up twenty proof sets for grey sheet prices. Cost him some time, but he got his ten percent with little risk, and made out like a bandit on my better heeled friend. I figure you can tell someone's character by how they treat the ones they can take advantage of.

Someday these proof sets are going to surprise people; especially the San Francisco minted sets. Every year there are fewer and fewer and the lower the price the more that are destroyed. In ten or twenty years there just isn't going to be enough supply for the paltry demand.
The price will be limited by the huge mintages that assure many survive but the only reason for the low price is that the supply dwarfs the demand at this time. But even now you could make good money buying these at bid and selling rolls of the coins at bid. This is why the sets are disappearing; everyone needs rolls but no one wants to bust up the sets.
Of course the biggest thing most people have against these coins is that they are modern. Purists just hate the concept that coins were even minted after 1964 and until recently they believed they weren't.
Proof sets are beautiful and cheap. Only a dealer or modern basher could hate that.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

That person in the LCS is a nut. You should continue telling everyone you know about his attitude. He really should have tried telling you just info about proof sets if that is what he thinks. He really had nothing to gain and lots to loose by being rude and ignorant.

Sounds like this dealer was making so much money that he could afford to turn away customers! Or maybe the "crazy" scenario is more believable...

He isn't crazy or anything else. He is a plain and simple jerk. I really am getting sick of the number of people who constantly claim that modern coins arent worth a darn. Ignorance and limited intellect in operation there. Dont go back there ever again for anything. Quote: Someday these proof sets are going to surprise people; especially the San Francisco minted sets. I'd have some fun with a stick in the mud like that. Send a friend in with the same proof sets to sell. Then when the guy gets rude, your friend can put him in his place. Then have another friend do the same thing. It's good cheap entertainment.
The bottom line here is that some people are just jerks. Back in 1992 give or take a year I was at a coin show with my girlfriend (now wife). I was on the hunt for a 1909-S VDB Lincoln. We were in college, but I had the money because I worked every other quarter. I saw one inside a display case and asked to see it. The old fart looked at me and told me that it was a very expensive coin. I told him that I know. He then told me that I couldn't afford it to which I replied that I could. I asked him if he was going to show it to me and he said no. I was completely stunned as the possibility of someone refusing to sell me the coin after I had saved up for it never even entered my brain. We looked around some more and guess what? I found another dealer who had one. He showed it to me without hesitation and I bought it. I still have that coin to this day and am glad that I bought it from a decent person instead of a jerk.

The good news is that most collectors and dealers are nice people, so that a story like this stands out.

Sometimes... We have read one 10 second account and many here think they have the answer. Did the owner Quote: almost kick me out ? My bet is he didn't. The OP is written in the voice of an inexperienced person, and do not see anything on what the OP might have said. In addition, what is this shop's specialty? If this shop deals in high end 17th and 18th century gold modern US proof sets are the last word in junk. Was the guy gruff? most likely, did he tell it the way it is? Most certainly. Should the OP be all whiney ? No. Welcome to the world. This guy is not too concerned some unknown in jeans and sneakers and a shopping bag full of modern proof sets gets upset that he is told he is trying to sell junk. That is just the way it is. No one owes you politeness, or anything else. Is it nice to get it? of course. The long and short of it is he is business to make money not tie money up in things that have no market. Stuff like that is a waste of time.

I am not sure, Tryna. Courtesy is what keeps us from beating each other with sticks when we have a bad day. The dealer certainly does not owe the OP a sale, or huge amounts of time, but a courteous "proof sets are rarely worth a coin dealer buying, because few customers want them - try APMEX if you want to sell them" costs little time and gets a newbie into the hobby. It also gives the dealer a chance to explain what they do buy.

ShinyCat,
Yes courtesy is a wonderful thing and life would be better if it was used more often. And if ifs and buts were candied nuts we all would have a magical Christmas.
All we know here is that the dealer did not respond the way the OP wanted.
Did the OP disrespect the dealer? We do not know. Was the OP discourtious? We do not know.
We do not know near enough to make a judgement and we sit here and we sit here passing judgement.
To the OP I say next time make sure the person you are dealing with wants to buy what you are selling. Are you polite to the telemarketer who interupts you selling junk you don't want? I bet you are not.

Quote: All we know here is that the dealer did not respond the way the OP wanted. Did the OP disrespect the dealer? We do not know. Was the OP discourtious? We do not know. This isn't a court case. Of course all of our responses are based on the assumption that the OP is telling the truth and has provided an accurate description of what actually happened. Assuming the OP did this, I feel passing judgment and saying that the guy working in the shop was a jerk. Quote: To the OP I say next time make sure the person you are dealing with wants to buy what you are selling. You can't know until you ask. Jerks often get offended when asked a question that they don't think will result in them making money.

Bret,
When you do something like that (having a friend try to sell the dealer the same coins), you have wasted EVERYONE's time and is quite immature. You have allowed a silly situation to overtake your life and really the dealer "wins" by getting into your head. Get over it and move on. Maybe instead of dwelling on it, the OP could take a life lesson. Not everything is fair, some people are rude, and sometimes you get a harsh reality check.

Sounds like that coin shop owner was a real jerk.
It's true that I'm not entitled to politeness, just as shopkeepers aren't entitled to my business. If I don't get one, they don't get the other.
I've never experienced anything like that from a LCS owner or employee, but I can guarantee that if I was ever spoken to that way I'd never set foot in there again.

You might call it immature, but I think that it's quite entertaining to make jerks waller in the misery that they attempt to spread to others. I really like to get along with others and attempt to treat everyone I meet with respect and courtesy. However, I'm not at all a conflict avoider. If someone dishes out their crap to me (or a family member or a friend), I'll give it back to them in spades. If it works for you to just avoid the person and move on, that's fine too.
