i havent really started collecting Kennedy half dollars yet, only been working on silver ae's and commemoratives. I hardly ever see the half dollars around. do banks even carry them (at least the ones prior to 2002)?

Sometimes you can find them at your local bank. I know I have asked the teller for them and she might not have any in her drawer but you can ask her to see if they have them

From what I've read on forums, it seems hit and miss at banks. I don't have any problems - but I only get a roll at a time. The teller has to go to the "vault" to get the roll, but that's all there is to it.

If you're in a rural area and they aren't used to people asking for halves, it's possible that the teller doesn't really know if they exist or not. The trick is asking the "right" person.

Am I reading the Red Book correctly as regards composition of this coin? It says "1971--Weight 11.34 grams; composition, outer layers of copper-nickel (1.750 copper, 2.50) nickel) bonded to inner core of pure copper; diameter 30.8 mm..."

Does this mean there is absolutely no silver in the coins after 1971?

The circulation strikes since 1970 don't have silver. The since 1992 you can get silver Kennedy's in the proof sets (S mint). Some of the bicentennial halves were also silver and released in special collector's sets. Silver percentages are here: http://www.coincommunity.com/coin_f.../kennedy.asp

Thanks to amac and patrick for your responses. I almost feel like a dodo asking something that was so obviously already answered on that Kennedy page. The reason I say "almost" is that this site is so huge that I haven't begun to cover it. I've been reading and reading and reading and searching and nosing around and am amazed at all that is here I don't know how some of y'all manage to stay on top of the messages. I have subbed to some of them, but not all, of course. What a deal to be able to be current on all messages.

I usually get from 2 to 10 rolls of halves every two weeks or so. I go through them for anything worth keeping and spend the rest. It is fun to watch people look at them as if they were fake coins or something. True at the banks they have to usually go to a main vault for them but if not busy, no problem. Occationally I find a Franklin and even once in a while a Standing Liberty. I know they probably came from a home coin collection robbery somewhere. Most criminals just spend the coins they get from a home robbery since they know attempting to sell them may take time and too risky getting caught.

The Denver coins should have a clear "D" mint mark on them. If you're don't have the mark, then they were minted in Philadelphia.

I know halves are scarce, but imagine how surprised I was when twice I asked my bank for halves, only to be told they don't have them. I asked about ordering, and they said they don't stock them, or keep them, or carry them - some such word.

Ajohnson1983,
If they don't have a mint mark they are Philadelphia mint. 71's and 74's are probably the most populous in circulation. Look on the rear for the designers initials FG in between the left leg and the tail feathers. If they're missing you might get a few bucks or it's neat to have. Don't get excited if you find what looks like doubling of the lettering on the reverse as this Mechanical Doubling and not true doubling. They're worth $.50. As Patrick said watch for the "S" mint mark. When you unwrap a roll look on the edges as silver should but not always show as dull silver or whitish look completely across the edge. You can see the copper in the center on the edge. Look for the 1965-1969 as they are silver clad. Rejoice if you find a 1970.
Enjoy your collecting!
