The counterfeiter did manage to get the weight right, I think... 31.22g is what I weighed it at before returning it. I don't have a fine measuring device so can't speak to it's dimensions.

How did the conversation go with the seller? Did he admit he sold you a fake?

Quote: Faker than fake. Almost comical. Which is one of the biggest reasons I'm led to conclude the dealer in question is an unrepentant thief. As I said at the start, I went there on a whim just to see what the experience would be like. 1. all transactions happen through a plexiglass security shield 2. his first offer of "silver bullion" was an unidentifiable non-currency token 3. he refused to provide a receipt for the counterfeit "2013 ASE" All this while I was providing clues I might provide future business, i.e. I stated I'd never been there before, I asked if he bought tanzanite or spesartine loose stones (he said yes).... I'm a non-threatening dude with a cane who is rapidly approaching 50 years of age. In short, I'm the type of guy that if I were an honest bullion dealer I'd be happy to have as a repeat client. And yet every thing he did only eroded my confidence in him and his business. After he wordlessly returned my $30 and turned his back on me, I ask if he agrees that it's counterfeit (ignores me) "have a nice day.... I guess..." (no response) by now I'm turning away to leave and I mumble something about how I suppose he'll just re-capsule it and sell it to the next sap (and I have Tourettes so I also mumbled a couple bad words.. not in a Deuce Bigalo way with shouting and gesticulations, just a little 2-word phrase about fellatio that was mumbled as well)... Well that got a rise out of him; and right in front of his daughter who'd entered while he was examining the counterfeit he jumps up, turns around and starts flipping me the bird and cussing me out. Wow. Just wow. Hopefully the Police do investigate, because he seems like anything but an honest businessman after those experiences yesterday.

So did you notify the police? They'd probably need some kind of evidence that he's dealing in counterfeit bullion, beyond just what we're saying here. There's another thread somewhere on this board showing specific characteristics of these fakes and comparing them to genuine pieces. And yes, the magnet test would probably work as well.

Yes, earlier today I filed a police report. The last time someone defrauded me the Toronto Police were all too happy to inform me that having my motorcycle stolen was a "civil matter" and they washed their hands of the matter entirely. Something tells me they'll find some excuse to not do anything about this as well. (They even tried to pass the buck when my 2nd wife was filing false police reports about me breaking into her apartment; instead of dealing with the problem themselves, they contact *me* and ask me to get her committed to a mental institution.) Lazy buggers, is my point.
As far as evidence, there are the photos which I submitted and they alone reveal the coin to be a cheap counterfeit; it doesn't need to be weighed, etc. because there are dozens upon dozens of clear errors in the artwork of the reproduction.
If he's an honest businessman, then he's got security cameras and records the feed. If subpoena'd they will show me buying the item and returning it and him jumping up to flip me off and cuss me out as I left.... If he's not [honest], he might not even keep the recordings....
I suppose if I were trying to sue him or something the evidence would be insufficient, but to an honest cop I'd like to think a bullion dealer purported to be selling cheap counterfeits would be worthy of at least some investigation... And as WildflowerAB stated in another thread, I have no way to know what they know already... maybe mine is just one of a growing stack of complaints against this guy...

Yikes. I've never set foot in one of those "we buy gold" places and this story certainly doesn't change my plans to never do so.

Well if it had been an authentic proof minting of the 2013 ASE it would A) probably have its COA, and B) be worth considerably more than the $30 Canadian he took for it. For a more educated buyer, I think it might be a good way to get a good deal on good silver [shopping at these buy-sell joints]. For the rest of us, it's a good way to get scammed, I reckon.

I wonder if he really knew it was fake. I recently bought a huge lot from a similar type of place. We buy gold place with plexiglass protecting the dealer. He sold me over 180 ounces including many proof ASE from various years. (even one 1994 in a case) among them were 30 impaired proofs that were not encapsulated and I bought them for a tad over melt. One of the 180 was a fake with the word COPY stamped on the reverse. It looked much like the one that you have just it said copy. I am pretty sure that he simply did not notice, being a bullion dealer, and not knowing much about anything coin. In your case, despite the rudeness you encountered when you returned it, he may have just been feeling stupid that he PAID for it when he bought it and he was finding out right now for the first time that he was duped. Of course it is possible that he did sell it intentionally. Either way, I am glad to take advantage of the fact that bullion dealers do not see the numismatic value of the items that they have, and that - for me- goes hand in hand with them buying fakes and me having to be careful from getting them. JMHO

Cascade - many of them may know what they are doing. BUt I hardly think that we could generalize and say that all of them do.
