The surface looks dull, like it was clean with a jewelry cleaner removing part of the original surface that would have been shiny. (bummer) The feathers are mostly gone from the breast. So I would think at the highest AU53, but the cleaning could drop the grade even lower. Tough call on just images sometimes.

It is legit, I have it as a VAM-3. http://www.vamworld.com/1884-S+VAM-3 It does appear to be dipped with AU details.

It appears genuine with AU50 detail. This date is common in circulated grades but is a better date as I'm sure you know. This looks like a $100 coin to me.

My major concern was that of the mint mark's authenticity:

1) What is that stuff within the lower loop of the 'S' on my coin? I refer to the 1 to 7 o'clock tilted 'filament' appearing to connect the mid portion of the 'S' to the lowest curved part of the 'S': possible overdate or other?

2) Why does the upper loop in my 'S' appear to be an elongated oval while the PCGS MM looks more circular?

3) Does anyone have a better representative photo of a genuine 'S' MM more in line with what I now possess in hand?

Click on the link I posted above. It is a die characteristic of VAM-3.

I'm at AU53 also. this date is known for stronger than normal strikes. yours would be below average. as for cleaning...not sure...it may have been dipped at one time but not overdone. I think it would grade straight

These two new shots taken with only fluorescent lights are pretty representative to what this coin looks appears to me in my hand.

I think I can see a bit more of the cartwheel trying to peek through.

Please let me know if these new ones change any minds w/r/t to if one cleaned it at some point and/or if the grade should change from previous opinions expressed.

I took these photos with my dedicated iPhone 4S coin camera.

thx

Oh, I forgot to mention that just on case a newbie is checking out this thread, double clicking on these new photos will expand them to fill up the entire screen for easier inspection.

I'd still grade it AU50 and lightly cleaned (likely market acceptable for problem-free).
