AU details, damaged ; perhaps a spot removal attempt.

Reverse die cracks are amazing as is the strong clash.

Thanks so much for your opinions! I really value them because my idea in buying it was to add to my 7070. That means cracking the slab open and before I did that I wanted to get opinions on grade and if it was details or not.

Now to the big reveal! It is a problem free AU-55. I really like the coin overall but was a little concerned about the ding and some of the marks on the obverse, but I figured if NGC says it is problem free I'll believe them. Since I planned to open the slab I wanted to be confident if I ever had it regraded in the future that I'd get the same grade. It seems I'm pretty safe with the AU-55, but most everyone saying details makes me pretty nervous. So I'm now strongly leaning towards keeping it in the slab to ensure it doesn't get slapped with a details grade. Especially since a very strong majority of Trade dollars in slabs have a the dreaded details on the label. I didn't buy it raw because of how many counterfeit Trade dollars are out there.

I think maybe I'll get some placeholder coin for the album and should I ever show off the 7070 just bring out this coin with it.

Paralyse: Can you explain where the clash is? I'm just not seeing it, but I'm a novice at detecting those. The die crack is clear, just the clash confuses me.

i normally dont like slabs. I only have a couple that are, however, because its a Trade dollar and graded without designation I would keep it there.

Not a big fan of NGC. Some people like them, but they tend to claim coins are details when they really aren't, or vice versa like seen here.

My LCS sent a batch to NGC a month or two ago and got them back last week. There were a ton of coins that came back as art. toning, cleaned, etc. I can say that most of them were correct, but there were a few that PCGS/ANACS would give problem-free.

Looks cleaned I see hairlines. Is it straight graded or details? I am at AU details

The presence of a few scattered hairlines is not necessarily indicative of a cleaning. Just casual wear on an AU coin can produce hairlines.

The area above Liberty's leading elbow sure looks it was once cleaned (perhaps not enough to affect the overall grade). Anyway, well done.

Below the eagle's right wing (viewer's left) is a die clash line.

Glad you got a straight grade, but the coin still looks cleaned to me based on the surface color and unnatural looking tone.

So the coin arrived yesterday. At first I was very happy with it as it has good eye appeal without magnification. Unfortunately there is spotty PVC residue along the outline of the upper half of Liberty's body. It doesn't show in the pictures but the green color is obvious under magnification in hand. I don't think the seller did this intentionally, but with it being borderline details to begin with, I think I'll probably return it. For one thing, if it isn't details now it will be eventually if the PVC acidifies.
