Don't forget the shrink wrapped plastic type rolls. When the State Quarters came out the rolls from the bank where I got mine were this style. -MV

Quote: Empty shot gun style wrappers can be bought at stores like Dollar General,Wa-Mart,Family Dollar, the bay, etc. John1 Beware of shady sellers using these shotgun wrappers and a roll crimping machine ,filling rolls with inferior coins and passing them off as OBW rolls .

and how about the unsearched rolls? OK, that's a different topic. Seriously, though, which of the types of rolls are considered "most productive" if one is to look through them for "keeper" coins? Does that differ by denomination?

Depends on what you mean by keepers. For maybe finding pre 64 silver Customer wrapped rolls, then Fed rolls. For finding better grade modern coins, I would say mint wrapped rolls. But the mint does not sell rolls of every denomination. I think this year they offer ATB Quarters, Native American dollar and last of the President dollars.

Machines and humans have very different criteria for what will or will no pass the good/not good check to go into a roll. A machine will see no difference between a worn Indian Head cent, a worn Wheat cent, or a worn cent from the 70s. They may or may not be calibrated to reject silver, and will always reject magnetic coins. Customer rolls may be picked clean, contain a good sampling of circulation coins, or may contain whole collections dumped by a clueless inheritor.

Exactly ,That's why I will always try to get customer wrapped rolls before any other kind . and I still say the whole month of December is the best time to get those CWR's. Think about it. people will need money for Christmas presents ,their last resort; roll up those coins in that 5 gal. empty water bottle and off to the bank .

I'm glad you started this thread GR58 because I have a (silly) question. I stop at my credit union about once a month and always ask for $2.00 bills, or Ike, sac - Presidential dollars etc as I like to leave these as tips etc. They usually have crisp $2.00 bills. This time they said they were out but had plenty of Prez dollars in the vault. I ask for a roll and she brought these out. I was thinking that for the last few years these were not available to the public...only through purchasing at the mint or mint - proof sets. Am I confused about this since they are brand new Reagan dollars? I thanked her and gave her $25 I know my photos are not the best but.....

Debra, I have not ordered the dollar rolls for my collection, but I have seen them come through the shop. Yours looks like the Reagan roll that is ordered from the mint. http://catalog.usmint.gov/on/demand...l&Quantity=1I am not sure why someone would order the roll ($32.95) then take it to the bank. Whatever the reason ... you got a good roll.

that is an amazing grab! I have heard of people cherry picking those rolls and spending the scuffed ones, but never someone just spending the whole roll for nearly a $10 loss!

Thanks GR58 and Finn. I got the impression that they had a lot of these rolls in the vault which is what was confusing to me. Maybe I will investigate further

Mine that vein! If nothing else, they are good trade fodder.
Also, back on topic for the thread...
I should also note that there are miscellaneous companies that package their own "mint" rolls. I got a few Washington and Jefferson from my bank back in the day. Clearly labeled as to what they were, but also clearly not OGP. Wish I had a pic; I busted them open to search for godless dollars, picked the best one from each, and re-deposited them.
Someone on here posted a few rolls of Westward Journey nickels rolled by such a company that came in a really odd amount like $1.50.
Also, from my experience, the shrink wrapped rolls usually come in a Brinks box. Dunbar (and maybe Loomis?) use the white rolls with colored ends.

re: shrink wrapped rolls Quote: Not sure where they originate. Same as with the "fed wrapped" rolls. Different firm doing the wrapping using different equipment, but same type source.
