The penny was a waste of till space in the register and took the cashier extra time to count/pick out change. Multiply that by 3-4,000 times per day and it was a manpower savings. In the T.O. area here in the Golden Horseshoe, rounding is done correctly across the board ... 1 or 2, rounded down and 3-4 rounded up when paying cash. Credit cards, etc had the exact amount charged.

Also no one has yet mentioned it, but if you pay electronically you still pay the exact amount. I know this is a bit off topic, but still part of the discussion.

That is an important thing to note. If you pay electronically most of the time, you probably do not miss the penny.

yes I know it didn't have any real value anymore but with the last 2012 penny I found in some rolls I bought from a seven eleven that had never been open before I got them and found some varities some have more of a double date and some less and some that have a little piece of metal under the first 2 in the date. Also some that had black spots on them

@Stogie: There is no way in Winnipeg that I would gladly GIVE my pennies back to the banks/mint. There's a reason they want them back and it's not because they're worthless.

IMO I think all we need is a 10-cent piece, a 20-cent piece, a 50-cent piece, a 1 dollar, 2 dollar, and 5 dollar.

@ace_ftw Thanks for your reply and from your background I know you are most certainly more educated about the system than I am. Quote: That same video for example may have a duty of only 5% in the USA and in Canada it is 18% (these are not real figures but examples) AS you said the taxes are different. However, the prices in my example were made taking into consideration that price tags in Canada have the taxes included on them (just stating this fact in the discussion for those who do not know). Quote: however what the average consumer does not see is the inherent costs to import items into each country is different.
So then you are saying it would be less expensive to import an item for a Walmart shelf in Canada than a Walmart shelf in the US, and this is why the item was so much less in Canada? Admittedly the way the USPS has become so expensive (nice way of saying what I perceive to be unnecessarily greedy and mis-managed) I could understand the US sotres having higher postal fees. However, I remember even back when postal rates were somewhat reasonable down here that the same scenario held. IN fact the very video that I was thinking of when writing that last post was Star Wars Episode I in 1999-2000!

I don't miss them at all in circulation but they were a lovely coin and I do miss being able to up-date my date collection and look for varieties.

When I first heard they were going to be discontinued, two thoughts came to mind, (1)more rounding up than rounding down, (2)the next step toward cashless society(especially the penny pinchers that will not give up the free cents on round up)and choosing to pay with a plastic card.
Quite a few times I've went to pay for something at a store and they gave me the round up price and I met the price posted with the balance in the pennies needed. Lol, simply to see reactions given, in the big stores it created confusion and the variety stores it seemed to create disappointment lol. A little experimenting economically for my curiosity.

I agree with the removal of the penny from circulation, but I am not happy with the fact that as a coin roll hunter and coin collector I am unable to acquire pennies from the bank for my collection. I think that the government should instead of melting down pennies, they should sell them to coin collectors.

I don't miss the penny when it comes to getting change back from a purchase or having a bunch of change in my pocket. But I do miss searching though a bunch and finding a "keeper" or two. So I guess my vote is yes and no. ha ha
