Oh, the fun you can have with an image editor. I had to think of something that I could spell with the available letters and did not want to use the obvious G-D swap. Foxwoods Man, Here is a closeup of the date. It does look like there is some slight Machine Doubling of the numerals. It is hard to tell if there is any doubling on the 1 because it is so narrow and the doubling on the other numerals is in the vertical direction. As to the waviness of the plane the date rests on, It is real and, I think, intentional.

That close up does not show me any of what I am seeing on your image #1 of the previous two.

Photobucket is having a brain fart and I can't upload any images to post so I guess I will let it drop. Seems I'm the only one that is interested anyway...

Edited to add:

Seen on another discussion forum re: 2016W

Whats up with the date on this ASE. The best way I can describe it is as a shadow depression of the date above the date. Is that possible?

Mine are both the same way, with a little doubling on the date too.

I see what you mean. The one I have definitely has the depressions above the date. I don't see any signs of doubling on mine though. I see a couple other little anomalies, as well. The 2 in the date is much closer to the rim than the 0 is. And on mine, I see a little mound inside the circle of the 6. Interesting. Thanks for pointing this out.

That is interesting... have not seen that anomaly before..

OK, after a lot more viewing and picture taking, I have come to the conclusion that there is no doubling, machine or otherwise on my UNC ASEs. What I think I was seeing was a combination of two things. The first and most common cause is the interplay of light and shadow that often causes the appearance of doubling that is simply not there. The second factor, I believe, is an artifact of the surface treatment applied to the die used to produce the uncirculated coins. The extremely fine "sand" blasting causes a sort of stair step effect on the angled walls of the numerals and letters. I think that this is created because the size of the "pellets" that are used is not that much smaller than the horizontal dimension of the edge of the letter & numeral devices and that an interference pattern develops. You can get an idea of the pellet size looking just to the right of the 6 where you can see several clear pellet hits that have not been overstruck by other pellets. What looks like flats and edges is in fact just slight changes in the angle of the edge of the device caused by the pellet impacts.

A wild theory, I know, but that is the kind of thing that my brain is good at creating, so I let it.

Adam, beautiful coins and great pics! The edge lettering is cool, I just wish they had done something on the other two collar pieces. Maybe just some scroll work or something totally out there like "Department of the Treasury" and "United States Mint".

Finally grabbed one and the proof. Didn't really care about the uncirulated dollar set.

We will not know how many have been struck until that "sold out" appears. They may have 200k more in storage or maybe 25k....I would guess somewhere in the middle

Two things re: 2016 W ASE

1) follow up on my order of 5 that only contained 4...letter today said they will refund payment on the missing coin..nice

2) 163,882 W's and 15,045 Dollar Sets sold as of 1/1

I would LOVE to know how many they minted in advance of 12/31
