Getting skunked with common dates. After searching rolls of dimes, quarters, & halves and finding coins to fill holes in my albums but no rarities or silver, I switched over to pennies. Many times the coin total is more than the price paid. I dump at Coinstar using the gift card option. If I searched more often this would be a problem. Gresham's Law says bad money chases good money out of circulation. That's why I take out all the copper, whether it's wheat backs or memorials. I will pass these on to my heirs. Someday they may be worth something! The foreign coins I keep for the novelty. My biggest pet peeve is when tellers refuse the request. I search $25 to $50 at a time. I don't feel that's too much to ask.

Taped rolls pretty much have "Searched Through" written all over them. Recently a few of my banks I buy rolls from have their rolls plastic wrapped! Any Idea if this is a bank thing or if like Loomis or other coin wrapping companies starting to do this to save money? Sured be nice if they did this to dimes, quarters, & halves! Window to silver for sure!!

I've seen dimes and quarters in plastic wrappers before. You're right, it's easier to see the silver (and easier for tellers to see it too!). I haven't seen them around here in years, though.

Only 1 out of the last 200 boxes I have received in town has been paper-machine rolled rather than plastic. Plastic is king here.

When coin roll hunting, I really hate it when I get a Wheat penny or a King George VI Canadian penny, or an old silver War Nickel only to have it all scratched up almost beyond recognition and the date is unreadable, you could only tell what it is from some undamaged areas. I had to put them in the "valuable metal keeper" bin when those coins could have been in coin folders in my numismatic collection.

But when I used to get the paper wrapped rolls it seemed I'd get a wheat every few rolls. Coincidence?

I collect pennies, so my peeve is getting a really grotty old verdigris-crudded coin snugged right up next to a sweet high ms penny, enough to transfer some of the crap onto the good coin. Arrg!

Quote: Also, 1964 nickels. The reverses often fool me into thinking they are older coins and then I turn them over to be disappointed. One thing I've noticed is that A TON of the 1964 nickels are very weakly struck in the reverse. When I see a coin which looks pretty worn, and weakly struck, it almost always seems to be a 1964... though ONE TIME a suspected 1964 Philly turned out to be a 1955 PHILLY!

One pet peeve I failed to include in the poll was "uncooperative tellers." While the vast majority of the tellers I've dealt with (like 98%) have no problem with my hobby, here are a couple who don't seem to like people getting coins from them with the sole purpose of going through them... At one of my BofA's yesterday, one of the grumpy old tellers got pretty whiney out of me taking the last $13 of her pennies (when I'm pretty sure they had more in the vault)... It worked out ok for me though... found 8 wheats in her $11 of MWR cents ($2 CWR skunk)...

How about waiting in line patiently as there seems to be 4 customers all have serious issues requiring 30+ minutes each to help them out.

I chose other, so here is my specification. I hate all of these, but thing that I really hate is that the local Coinstar charges 3-5%, and I also feel bad for taking one banks rolls and giving em to another bank.

As for taking rolls from one bank and giving to them to another, don't feel bad about it... I like to check with the banks to if they're low on rolls or if they have too many. When you call the banks ahead of time and build rapport it helps a lot in the long run.
