Found this 1916-D Mercury in a PCGS MS62FB slab offered for about $15K. I think the AU58FB looks better, and I would rather own that one, even though this one has a higher technical grade. This one is PCGS MS66FB and offered for $77.5K. It is probably nicer but 8x nicer? Probably not. Nice to have friends like that. Very nice coin. It's amazing how eye appeal can make a coin more desirable. I too would take the AU Merc that belongs to the OPs friend over the MS examples pictured. Toned coins are not my preference.

Some really nice looking coins. I always find it amazing how many 1916D Mercury dimes are out there in that shape. A little disapointed about the clearness of the middle bands on almost all of these. I still like mine too.  Of course there is always the 1915 Mercury dime.   Notice the clarity of those bands. |
