Okay, so you mean like this:

The ball of the 5 looks swallowed on the 1858

The straight part of the five (as pointed out directly below) is pointed directly at the middle of the ball on 1857

And here is why I am confused, the straight part is still pointed directly at the middle of the ball on 1856s as well!

I see the difference between the 1856 and the 1858, but I do not see a difference between the 1856 and the 1857!

I have noticed that there is a chip in the ball on 1856s.

Devin, you keep this up you'll be an expert on these matters in no time.

Way to go young man!

In ten years, you'll be writing books about these topics, hope I'm around to see it! Very impressive, great initiative!

Right, good observation. The point of the downstroke on the 1857 is slightly to the left of center on the loop terminal, though not as far left as on the 1858. On the 1856, it is dead center, and once you have seen a genuine one you will not mistake it.

Hi. I've had an 1856 FE for a couple of years now, and I'm wondering if you could take a look and give your opinion. If it looks legit, I'll pay for the PCGS service. With so many fakes out there, I'm a little worried.

Yes, note that "notch" of missing detail of the leaf on the reverse. It is a diagnostic on most of the Chinese fakes.

Check the counterfeit forums for a lot of photos of them.

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to give such a thorough analysis of my coin. I guess I'll keep my day job. With this many collectors in agreement, I'll have to accept the facts. Thanks again, you've all be very helpful.
