Well then maybe it isn't such a terrible idea. Meh, might as well try it with a box or two.

I still think time is better spent actually looking through the rolls. There are just too many variables affecting weight and I would be afraid of missing something. At the very least you should check the edges.

Quote: I'm starting to actually hate dime rolls. Nothing really to look for other than silver ridges. I guess I'll just have to keep plugging away Actually, there are non-silver dimes worth saving. 1969 Philly, 1982 and 1983 P&D, 2009 P&D... I have no problem getting a good premium 2-3x face or more for these coins on ebay in circulated grades, and much more for AU+ examples of the earlier dates mentioned.

So, as a test I just weighed every roll in a new Wells Fargo box. Every roll went between 113.9-114.1 except one that went 116.4. I'm kind of excited to crack that one, but I'm going to save it for last to see if the theory would work for just hunting silver. I'm still going to crack the other rolls, even though I'm fairly certain they are all clad and from 1995-2007 like most of the dime rolls from Wells Fargo this week lol

Say there Is a silver in there, how much more would it weigh?

At least .23 grams different. That's the difference between a clad dime weight and a silver dime weight

Quote: Say there Is a silver in there, how much more would it weigh? Probably 114.2 or 114.3 grams. That said, it's possible to find a silver dime in a "normal" weighted roll if there are really worn, defective, or foreign coins in it.

Yes, like I said, too many variables to know with any certainty. Besides, looking through the rolls is supposed to be half the fun.

Just to clarify, I open all my rolls without weighing ahead of time.
I set ender rolls aside and weigh them, and if they have a noticeably high weight, I keep them for one day when I can't get rolls anymore, or for kids, etc.

Back in the day, when my dad would return a bag (50.) of
cents, they were weighed. They would calculate what was there & credit
your acct.
