Seems a bit random. Clearly the ANACS holders are accumulating moisture within them, but they are not the ones that are developing black spots. I'll actually take the coins home next month and take a bunch of pictures. Depending, I may continue the study.

Assume you have baseline pics? If so, please give us some comparisons!

Yes, I have all the baseline pics. I'll show comparisons when I bring them home in a month and take the T3 pics.

Pulled the box out of stability chamber today, 8/8/17. This is a couple months later than I had planned, but I got busy. The coins have been at 40C/75%RH for 5 months. Early observation shows marked darkening on some of the red cents, spots, and evidence of moisture intrusion into the holders. Just bumping this post for now as it will take a while to take pictures of all these.

As with all the pics, it is difficult to adjust the lighting to be exactly the same as 5 months ago. There is brownish color over the proof surfaces, though it is hard to pick up in the pictures.

It all has to do with environment and storage . I'm sure if you had a super red MS68 Wheat cent in a 100% air tight holder ,put it in a temperature controlled glass enclosure . seal it,and leave in a dark location for a few hundred years ,it would come out as red as ever .
As this is just my opinion ; does anyone have a different solution ?

None of these holders is airtight, however the coins in 2x2s did just as well as the TPGs and better than some of them. In a high humidity environment, perhaps trapping moisture in a small enclosure is not the best preservation option. BTW, the temperature was controlled and the coins were in the dark for 5 months.

Nice work so far @andrew99. Both the '61 and the '72 are in NGC slabs?

Great experiment! 5 months is a short time for toning, but the heat and humidity should have accelerated the process. It'll be interesting to see how the cents in the other holders did.

Red doesn't stay Red.
That's why PCGS doesn't back labeling coins Red anymore.
They WILL tone to RB eventually.
"Eventually" depends on the environmental conditions of storage area.

Interesting results. I would have thought the high relative humidity would do more damage. The slab seems to slow it down more than I expected, although it still shows they are not impervious.
