Hmmmmm quite an epiphany spruette. I guess my question to you is how old were you when you did this to this penny and how many years have you waited for this to turn up?

Guess that's what's called "disposable income" (of which I have none) that flows out of many additional holes in one's head...

The seller says it's an "error in the stamping process".

I really didn't have a clue one way or another as I stated in the beginning of this thread. One thing is certain I don't bid on items I have a doubt about it's authenticity. I posted the Listing because I knew you guys would find it interesting

Wow, it's over $63 now. Get your bids in folks! I'm really tempted to see if I can recreate that. The effect on the obverse is interesting. (not to sell, of course)

I believe it's a mint error, if it were struck outside of the mint by something the devices would be flattened and wider, take the columns for instance they look normal to me, so I think it was done at the mint

Quote: I believe it's a mint error, if it were struck outside of the mint by something the devices would be flattened and wider the depression mark on the reverse versus the bulge on the opposite side obverse on the exact location and the indentations on the Rim tells me it was done by some kind of hand tool.if there was a side view shot of the coin, the degree of the outward expansion on the obverse would have become much more obvious.

Sold!...for a measly $86+shipping. There are two main reasons for this not being a mint error: The bulges on the edge from the pressure should not be there if it was struck in the collar. Also, the obverse die would have prevented that effect on the obverse. If anything, the obverse should be very well struck because of the added metal/pressure from the can tab. The remaining devices on the reverse in the affected area, I believe, can be explained by the maleability of aluminum compared to say, a piece of steel. Where's my bench vise?
