For that much money, I'd rather buy a great condition Mercury dime. Like a 1915 or a 1946 Merc.

When it comes to the 1913 Liberty nickel, I would never buy that coin at any price unless I knew I could resell it very quickly for more money. I have no respect for that piece which was made illegally. If I had had one, I'd sell it and use the money to buy some "real coins."

As for buying low grade coins, I almost always avoid them. My attitude is if I can't afford a decent example of something, I would rather not own it. By "decent" I mean at the lowest a Choice VG. The lowest grade coin in my type is a 1796 half dollar in Fine-15. I wish it was a VF, but that's what was available at the time I purchased it.

Haha, I have MORE respect for illegally made/ illegally saved coins, ie 1933 $20. Then again I am Illegaltender!

Definitely. For some of the coins I need $5K will only get you a Fr-2 or AG-3. My 1795 NC-3 large cent is a Fr-2 and is tied for the third finest known. You want to wait for a better one? There are only 8 of them and finest known is a G-4.

Until this past (expensive) weekend I've been kind of looking for a really cruddy low grade even damaged 1793 S-1. All I cared is that it be attributable. I was figuring it would be in the $2500 - $3000 range. (That idea is shelved for right now, Dealer made me an offer it couldn't refuse Saturday and I'm going to be paying it off for awhile.)

Yes, the 1913 Liberty Head nickels were illegally made, but not illegal to own. They were simply distributed by a mint employee to Colonel Green, who then sold them to 5 collectors (correct me if I'm wrong). It's not like the 1933 $20 where the coins were struck after gold was recalled, and thus illegal to own.

Besides, it happened such a long time ago. Can't we just get over it?

Well, for $5000, I'd get a nice 1889 CC or 1893 S Dollar.

As TheNickelGuy pointed out, only five 1913 nickels are known.

A 1913 Liberty nickel was sold in 2013 for $3.1 million. I'm sure there are plenty of millionaires out there who wouldn't mind dumping at least half that on a newly discovered, well-known American rarity, no matter what condition it's in. So, yeah, I think I could see my way clear to scrape together $5K with the promise of making $1,495,000 on the deal.

A very rare coin is worth buying in ANY condition, if affordable. Then again, 98% of all collectors will ignore ugly very rare coins, and purchase bright and shiny "common" coins. They will soon learn the economics of numismatics
