Good catch, Everest!

While I'm not in the green bean conspiracy theory camp, I honestly don't see this subject coin as a mistake. I view this particular bean as bait for an unsavvy investor.

Right on Everest! Nice research! I feel sorry for the schmuck who paid $977.50.

At that time it was graded by ANACS as AU Details
Net Au 50 Cleaned. It next appeared on 11Aug2011 in a PCGS 50 slab with a green bean where it sold for$977.50

To me, it also says something about PCGS, not just CAC. I've said it before (maybe on a different forum though) - I think of PCGS as the bottom of the 3, with NGC and ANACS in 1st & 2nd respectively.

Great point, Beefer! Who would have thunk that the cheapest grading service was the one that got it right. I look at a lot of slds so this one stuck out like a sore thumb as cleaned. But not everyone looks at as many Seated dollars. It's the type coin guys that get railroaded. Someone should put in a call to CAC about this coin before the ANA show.

Perhaps the ANA needs to launch a national Public Service campaign: "Buy The Coin, Not The Slab"

Would never happen, but fun to dream...

It reminds me of notorious art fakes. Everyone has a large money interest in discovering new and expensive pieces of art and not a shred in challenging the authenticity of a fake or overrated piece of art. All the middlemen get paid and the only loser is the end buyer.

Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes? -PCGS, -Groucho Marx

Take a hard look at any coin before bidding or purchasing. Make sure it aligns with your collecting standard and goals. PCGS gets it wrong as much or more than NGC or ANACS in my opinion. The CAC thing surprised me a bit. I've noticed CAC is liberal with the stickers on some high end tarnished/toned coins, but the coin posted is not on the upper end of any AU grade for an open 3 in my opinion.

And some ANACS coins are more conservatively graded than NGC! I mean, of course a few fails here and there, but I disagree with NGC more often than ANACS.

Of course they don't. They can't pay PCGS or even NGC prices for ANACS coins and expect to stay in business. Having a different price tier for ANACS than the other two which they would have to do would just devalue their brand, hence they only sticker the top two

This coin is not the only example of a beaned coin that makes you wonder what is going on. The Bean is a way for folks to make lots of $$$$. Period. What's next? Someone starting the "bean the bean" service to offer 3 opinions on a coin? So you can REALLY be sure it "makes the grade"?
