You'll go nuts looking at the same coins over and over again.

Newbie, answer to question @phasing out ole abe, nothing has ever been officially stated as to the end. Rumors fly, the P mark " signifies its death", costs too much, etc. For starters, the "mint" can't determine squat about which coin is made or stopped. That requires an act of Congress, don't know of any after midnight bills about coins going through lately, do you? There are many folks here on CCF well in the know, we'd be among the first to know. There are reasons to terminate the cent, and nickel, and dime...and maybe sooner than later we'll have a world cash card, seems to be the direction its headed, no need for "national" coins or currencies either.

Quote: For starters, the "mint" can't determine squat about which coin is made or stopped. That requires an act of Congress The Mint creates coinage to fill demand from the Federal Reserve. The Fed could just refuse to order new cents, with or without Congressional approval. Yes, that is probably as unlikely as Congress making the decision, but still possible.

Definitely possible. That's what happened in 2009, the Fed informed the mint they would not be ordering any more five cent pieces or dimes that year because of the surplus they had on hand, so the mint stopped striking them. They could just as easily decide to stop ordering cents altogether and that would be the end of them (Except in collector sets.)
