Get $200 in nickels from a few banks, sort them. Have us guess: Earliest year found, most from one date, number of War Nickels, etc.

If you do that, I want to get my War Nickel guess in now - at zero

The denomination, year, and mint of the next coin you find in public.

On the street, a coinstar reject, the return slot on a vending machine.

When I was a kid the best place to check was the coin return on a public telephone. If you find one take a picture. Heck, that could be a contest, try to get a pic of the Tardis.

Interesting suggestions. The "next found coin" idea allows me to start the contest before even I know the answer and if I don't look, the contest can run forever! It wouldn't because I'm constantly looking for free money. I'd probably have to exclude more recent dates like anything 1990 and up to make it more interesting. I can imagine someone guessing 2015-D LSC and I find one the next day on the ground.

I also thought about using the 475 world coins I recently bought somehow. I've posted some specifics about the lot but, not much.

Yeah, I don't really want a 20-way tie to sort out...

You could get a very zoomed in picture of any coin (or multiple coins) from your bucket of foreign coins and have us try to guess what they are, where they're from, even date and mintmark if you feel like it. Also, I really enjoy the idea of guessing the next coin you will find in public and think that would be very fun to do.

I don't want to sound dumb, but can we keep it at U.S. coins and NOT World .

I am working through the specifics of an idea I had using the world coin lot. I am by no means an expert in that area so, it would be simple and not really give any advantage to those who know world coins much better.

I'm also thinking about how the above suggestions could work and how to format them, so I haven't discounted any idea and please, keep 'em coming!

I'm still over 150 posts away so, there's time.

Considering your current events, check this out.

This coin will not be available until 2018, so maybe at 5000.

Here's an idea you could post zoomed in images of different DDO's and DDR's without the date showing and would have to figure out what they are.

The winning design was supposed to be announced in July but, I can't find anything about it. I may consider it once it's released. Thanks for the info.

@Buckwill

Unfortunately, that would end up being too easy considering the folks who roam about here.

Thanks for the ideas!

If all goes well, I should be starting the contest in about a week. I have yet to decide on prizes but, I'm thinking silver and three winners.

It may seem like too much but, I really value the forum and the many members who I have come to know and interact with across the world. After all, my main focuses are Jeffersons and errors so, silver is an aside.

For me, involving zoomed-in or blurry pics of coins may give something away I don't want to because I don't know enough.

I really like the "next coin found" idea but, I'm having trouble turning that into a multi-winner contest, which is what I want to do. I will definitely keep that in mind for maybe a random contest in the future (the Holiday season is approaching).

Any other suggestions before I unleash the World Coin Bulk Buy contest?

Next coin found = 1 winner
Next two coins found = 2 winners
Next three coins found = 3 winners

Hmmm...I don't want to snuff the ideas proposed but, when thinking about a contest, I really would like to avoid a major "tie situation".

Maybe I can do as nss-52 suggested and start it with guessing the next three coins found -
date/mm and denomination. I think that creates enough disparity to avoid a thick grouping of guesses.

I think I may run with that and figure out the logistics for it. Many thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm certainly open to them!

Okay everyone, I will more than likely reach 3,000 tonight so, the contest will start tomorrow evening/night (maybe late ). So everyone can consider the premise beforehand:

It will be to guess the next three coins I find in public (not in change of course). They could be from a Coinstar, self-checkout tray, store floor or ground/parking lot. The guesses should include date, mintmark, denomination and also date found for tiebreaking/bonus purposes. So even just going back to the '70s, that allows for hundreds of possibilities if not thousands depending on the dates found.

They, of course, should be U.S. coins. I will decide between now and then what more recent dates to exclude. It won't be very interesting to allow 2016 cents, for example. Most likely it will be pre-1990.

As suggested, the prizes will include silver and other goodies: maybe some proofs and any other interesting items I think of. I will be selecting the prizes this time in secret and try my best to make the three lots as equal as possible.

Anyway, see everyone tomorrow in the new topic!
