I think the suggestion above that location is relevant helpful. Have you done CRHing in the same area? Where I am, I get many more coins from the Philadelphia mint than the Denver mint.

Halves have always been a coin that circulates 1-2 transactions then goes into a jar forever or to the bank. If you live in the West, it's possible that very few P bicentennial halves made it out your way.

Coins are distributed closest to the mint, and in the case of halves, see little circulation and won't travel far.

By the same token living on the east coast means most of your coins will be from Philadelphia, with a few D, and very few S.

Why would one hoard only the no mint mark bicentennial? Is there something I'm missing out on, or is this a case of people just do things?

You're on the wrong side of the country to be seeing many Philadelphia coins. I'm in Philadelphia, and would expect the percentages you've seen to be reversed (probably even more extreme) if I were to do the same search you've done.

"Where have all the 1776-1976 Kennedy halves gone?"
'Gone to collectors every one'.

Nice reference sel_69l.

And yes OP the location matters. I would say you have done pretty well to get as many Philadelphia mint halves as you have!

Don't know about those, but can tell you where about 100 clad proofs are. Found them in a box of halves about 8 yrs ago. Still have em all except for 1 that is in a wall for someone to find yrs from now.

I'm on the West Coast and I haven't found a 1976 P half for along time. I got a roll of Ikes Dollars awhile back and 1976`s were Denver mint and 10 rolls of Halves hardly a P in the batch of any year of coins. A lot more of P m/m 1976 quarters though.
I just turn the D`s back to the bank. And to many quarters to save

they are all just sitting in piles in peoples houses, safe deposit boxes, cans, jars, boxes, etc. Since no one uses them, where else could they be.

I have to believe the majority are in FED storage. Certainly there are tens of millions in sock drawers nd millions in collections but 600 million is far too many to fit in so few places.

China claimed they found a whole rail car full of them in recycled autos but only a US government employee would buy this. ;)

You're Californicate! Of course location, location, location!

Then be like me, get about 1/3 P mints by being in the center. In Missouri I get mostly D, some P and very few S among the cents, will find the 69/70Ss nickel fairly often, since Philly made none...
